How much time off after sleeve did you need?

Recommended Posts

I have a desk job and wondering how much time to take off from work after sleeve?

Some seem like they went back to work right away and others need 2 weeks or more. I know everyone is different but wondering if those that needed the extra time was because they just needed the rest or because they were really still feeling bad/sick?

I went back after a total of 6 days (had surgery on the 10th, first day back in the office was the 16th). I also work a desk job and honestly I was getting to feel stir-crazy at home. I can't imagine taking 3-4 weeks off like some people do. That said, I tolerate surgery VERY well, and had no issues with keeping fluids or full liquids (yogurt, SF pudding, Protein Drinks, etc.) down after the first couple days on clears only.

However, I did go ahead and fill out the required work paperwork for medical leave (disability and FMLA) on the offhand chance I would have had issues and needed longer time off.

A lot of people have said they liked having extra time to adjust to taking all the vitamins/supplements, to managing their eating schedule, etc. but I was good to go quickly.

I also have a desk job and went back to work in 3 weeks. I probably could have done 2 weeks. But I was still tired and just spent week 3 napping, learning how to eat, take vitamins/supplements on a regular schedule and I started my exercise then. I am 52 years old and maybe the younger folks recover faster but 3 weeks was perfect for me.

My girlfriend whom has a desk job went back to work after 6 days. My surgery is scheduled for November 1 and i've requested two weeks off but I'm looking forward to going back much sooner!!! I attended a 'sleeve talk' with the surgeon yesterday and they say it just depends on the person if whether any complications are involved or how the healing stages goes.

Good Luck with everything!

I could've easily went back after 1 week. However, I still had the staples so my surgeon would not release me until they were out and he examined me. So I had to wait 2 weeks.

What type of staples did you have? And where were they located? My girlfriend just had the surgery and the only staples she has are inside holding the stomach but the doctor isn't removing them. Other then that her sutures were closed using glue and bandages.

I had one to two staples per incision. And now my scars are just about not so noticeable. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
