Fear Of Crime And Mexico Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi: I want surgery for the sleeve in Mexico but my husband is fearing crime, such as car jacking, kidnapping, etc as a huge risk. There are travel advisories. Anyone want to comment on this?

no one can tell you if you will be safe or unsafe when you travel ( anywhere in this world). I have been to Mexico 3 times and haven't had any issues. My Aunt goes yearly for her dentistry ( no issues there ), however, I did have a small issue in the Caribbean ( pick pocket ). Don't keep your money in one place ( mom's favorite place is the bra, she said she would at least get to 2nd base if she lost some money lol) I like the sock and yes the bra (blush). The inside of a hat isn't the best, but will do in a pinch. I also keep a dummy wallet with a small amount of cash ( to hand over if you must ). Don't wear jewelry or designer purses, and watch the people around you ( good to do anywhere). Enjoy yourself, and their wonderful atmosphere. I am going on the 22nd for my surgery and plan on a great time.

Are you planning on driving to Mexico? In that case, yes, I would be worried as your license plates and unfamiliarity with the route could make you stand out as a tourist target. However, if you are flying into San Diego and are being picked up by the surgeon's van service, I wouldn't worry. They negotiate the border crossing at least once a day and definitely know the route to the hospital or clinic. After you arrive at the hospital/clinic, I would take the precautions one would take in the States to prevent theft. It's not like you will be wandering the streets while you are there, flashing cash and jewelry (at least I hope not.) Thousands of people go to Mexico each year and the likelihood of something happening to you is very small. However, if you are planning on using Dr. Almanza, be aware that some patients were recently robbed at gunpoint in the recovery house. It sounds like it was an inside job. I would find out if security issues have been addressed.

Foxbins is right... My BF's sister lives in Mexico and even he refuses to drive into Mexico. He says we fly in and rent a car or we don't go. It's too risky to announce you are a foreigner.

If you are brought into Mexico and don't drive I think it is just as safe as anywhere else. We had no problems at all. I have driven through Detroit and had more problems than I ever had in Mexico. There is crime everywhere.. as long as you go with a driver I think it is fine. I'm home safe and sound and would do it again in a heartbeat :)

I flew into Mexico and my Doc's car service picked me up. Mexico is 2 worlds. If you are in a place you shouldnt be then expect the worse. If you go for surgery and do what the Doc says, No problems.

Hi Folks: My husband is insisting I have the surgery stateside so to keep him happy, even though it's more money, I'm having surgery on the Oregon coast, at Bay Bariatrics. Thanks all for your replies.

I've seen some ads for a place just 2 mi. south of the border in Tijuana called Mt.Zion. I spoke with them. They pick you up & transport you to & from the airport in San Diego. I have no information about the quality of their work but the gal with whom I spoke was Anglo and seemed to be very knowledgeable and understanding about my fears. I ended up choosing a surgeon in Orange County at significantly more money but I thought I'd share what I learned about the place in Mexico. Hope that helps.

Thanks Everyone. I might have done it in Mexico if not for my husband. I have to go to Coos Bay for follow-ups regularly, which is doable. All that said, there are so many happy people who've done it in Mexico that it can't be that much of a problem...I, myself, probably wouldn't hesitate (gotta keep hubby happy but cost $7K more).

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
