5th time a charm?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I've been in and out of here for a few years now. This will be my 5th and final attempt at the surgery. Over the past 4 years, I have had 4 surgery dates, only to lose them at the last minute because I lose my insurance. This last time it was because the company I was working for just decided they didn't need to pay the insurance premiums - so now, not only do I not have insurance to cover surgery, I'm stuck with he bill for all the pre-op appointments, etc.

Cash pay is NOT an option.

My husband and I are in the process of moving out of this hell-hole of an area where employers just screw people repeatedly. His new company has Kaiser Permanente Insurance in Colorado. Anyone familiar with KP and whether they cover the sleeve and what the requirements are?

Thanks

Wow, five times? Congratulations on your persistence, this must be so frustrating! I wish I had an answer for you on the insurance, but I only know Blue Cross. I hope it works out for you this time!!!

I am with Kaiser in California. They do WLS (RNY,Sleeve and Band) on patients with a BMI of 40 or greater with special circumstances like comorbid conditions like diabetes or knee and/or hip problems / arthritis , or in Patients with a BMI of 50 or more with no comorbid conditions.

Congratulations on your persistence!!

I know there are alot of people here who have Kaiser - I see alot of people mention it. Might look over in the insurance forum to get some users and they can tell you all about the process! I know they seem to have lots of classes you have to go through!

Yes, Kaiser does pay for WLS. However, you would have to look at YOUR plan and see if it is written that YOUR plan pays. Each Kaiser plan is different. If you don't know or aren't sure, call member services, they can help you!

Kelly ;)

Thanks everyone! I appreciate the supportive words and the quick replies! I have had nothing but hurdles - you'd think that with all the jumping I've been doing, I'd have lost a pound or two! :)

Be prepared to jump through a few hoops with Kaiser... They require a few classes and such to better prepare YOU. That way YOU aren't asking people on this board questions that should be answered already by your surgeon or aftercare staff...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
