Suffering from major Insomnia! Please Help!

Recommended Posts

Ever since I was sleeved (08/31/2011), I have been unable to sleep through the night. I usually toss n turn for about an hour and finally getting up between 3am to 4am everynight. It really started heavily this past week once I started taking my multi-Vitamin but nothing else in my daily routine has changed (work, stress nor sleep times, etc.) nor am I taking any medications.

Just wondering if anyone else has suffered this since being sleeved or am I just crazy?? I'm thinking it may be the Vitamins, which sounds crazy to even say, however I stopped taking them for a day to see what the results would be and I still woke up around the same time.

Hi, I was sleeved August 29th and suffered from the same insomnia for the first week after coming home. It has gotten better but at least twice a week I find myself up at 3 or 4 AM on the puter or reading a book. This is so unlike me, I slept like a rock before surgery so I don't quite know what to make of it.

I know it isn't much help but I just had to share that I am experiencing the same thing.

Sucks huh?

Sorry if this ends up being a double reply. System is giving me some issues.

I slept maybe 4 hours a night for the first 2 months. As my calorie intake per day increased from about 350 to about 600, the insomnia disappeared. I actually thought at the time it was my body reacting to the extreme calorie restriction and since it let up as I gained intake, it seemed to be the cause. At least for me.

Just knowing I'm not the only one going through this helps tremendously, believe me! Like you, I never woke up in the middle of the night where I wasn't able to go right back to sleep so this is an adjustment. Especially when I can't really pinpoint an "actual" cause.

If only during those times in the early morning I would get the energy to exercise.......LOL

It happens to me too, and I take Ambien to help me sleep too! It didn't happen the first week, but since then I've been waking up most nights in the middle of the night and I'm up about an hour before I can fall back asleep. It's very annoying. I have no idea why, but you definitely aren't alone.

I was sleeved on 8/16/11 and I am going through the same thing. I have tried sleeping in my bed but can't... I have been sleeping in my recliner but I wake up at least 5 times a night. Before surgery I could sleep anywhere and anytime... LOL

Same problem here. I even took ativan tonight to try to get dome zzzzzz's. Apparently that isn't going to work either. I guess it'd back to melatonin for me too.

You can get melatonin at any Vitamin or healthfood store.

I bought my daughters melatonin at Walgreens, so probably all other regular pharmacies carry it as well. It comes in different milligrams. Google to see what dosage is best for an adult. 1mg works for my 9 year old with Adhd. Her pediatrician recommended it.

Try Melatonin. It gives a better rest than Ambien and it's natural, (and OTC).

Melatonin made me feel more drugged than anything I've ever taken in my life.More than the anestesia from surgery! I could not shake it off the next day. I tried it 5 times. The dose that worked to bring on the sleep wanted to keep me asleep for 18 hours. So I went to 5 mg. ambien also and have no complaints. It's one of those things where there are many solutions, you have to find what's right for you. I was lucky that it really let up late in my 3rd month post sleeve.

I am 9+ months out and my insomnia is worse than ever. I had issues with it prior to being sleeved and it has gown worse sine then. I took Ambien for a while, then grew tolerant to it. Ambien only helps you GET to sleep, if you aren't asleep in an hour or two then it won't help any. I can take a nap nearly ANY day and fall right to sleep, but sleep at night? Nearly every night I sleep fitfully if at all till 3 or 4 am then sleep till I am supposed to wake up and then don't want to. It's been hellish at times. I wonder if the changes body chemistry has anything to do with it?

I've seen Melatonin at Walmart, and also look into 5-HTP, I have found success in helping with my insomnia with it. It's at Walmart and other places too. It increases serotonin which helps with mood as well as naturally increases the melatonin. Serotonin affects sleep, mood, appetite, etc. It is said to possibly help with insomnia, depression, weightloss, fibromyalgia, and a lot more. Google it, but it seems to help me with my sleep too. Disclaimer: I am not a dr lol. So check with your dr before trying new meds or don't take it if you take other sleep or depression meds, without medical advice.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
