Papa Jack 86 Posted September 10, 2011 A friend & co-worker of mine wants to get the sleeve. We were the same size & he see's me shrinking. With my insurance option I could just go & get the sleeve. His insurance option he needs a Dr to recommend him. As a young man he doe not have family Dr. So he went to a Dr down the street & ask about getting WLS. The Dr told him no because he does not agree with WLS because it was the easy way out. What a jerk!
Catracks 865 Posted September 10, 2011 Just for THAT reason it has taken me YEARS to finally start down this road. I had many skinny doctors tell me that since i couldn't lose weight i didn't have the discipline needed for WLS. I asked them for help and they gave me low fat diets to follow or under pressure offered me expensive diet programs like an 8 week Medifast type thing. If I had done this sooner, I would not have the high blood pressure or many of the co-mobidities. What in the hell is wrong with these people? Maybe your surgeon could recommend a local doctor who has his/her head screwed on straight.
ILKrista 36 Posted September 10, 2011 The same thing happened to me. When I first asked my doctor about surgery, he told me the only reason anyone is fat is because they are lazy and eat like a pig (yes, that was what he really said!). It put me off surgery for about 2 years before I finally went to a new doctor and got the referral. Tell your coworker to keep trying. There are doctors out there who will help. kellyw74 258 Posted September 10, 2011 There are so many people that have such opinions about WLS and it really pisses me off too! Dr. or not!!! I remember when I first set out to have the surgery. I had asked my pcp and he was all for it. I was having some female issues and went to my obgyn and he wanted to do a test on me, but I weighed 280lbs. He told me to lose 40lb and that when i got there to call him. I told him that I was going to have WLS and he asked me if I was suicidal???????? Seriously, what?????? He said that I would die if I had that done and I was too young to die!! LOL are you kidding me?!?!??! People are so friggen ignorant! I knew at that point, I would not tell a sole about my surgery, but my husband and I haven't! Some people! UGGGH!! I am glad that I had a dr. that didn't give me greif about the surgery, but if he would have, I would have just found a dr that would have let me do it. there are lots of dr.'s out there that don't believe in it, but there are lots that do. Tell your friend to find another dr.! Kelly
wishes 125 Posted September 10, 2011 Yeah, that pisses me off too. I really hope he finds a new PCP.
AnneG 7 Posted September 11, 2011 I wonder if your friend could call the insurance coordinator of the surgeons office and explain that he doesn't have a pcp and if they could give him a recommendation of a good pcp in the area who has referred patients to them? Is that considered- acceptable?
Papa Jack 86 Posted September 11, 2011 We go to a company doctor every year so I told him to get it from him. The company Dr was pleased I had it done. Very good suggestions from the team.
suez1105 2 Posted September 13, 2011 That is just really ignorant. I went into my family doctor and just told her I was getting it done, with or without her approval, infact, I didn't even want her approval, I just wanted to tell he I was getting it done. Tell him to go and find another doctor, if this is what he wants and needs he will keep looking until he finds someone who will give him a yes. I so wish I had started on this path a long time ago, I am not sleeved yet, but my surgery is Monday 9/19. I think just getting started and getting to the seminar was the hardest part, but once I was there, I just couldn't wait to get it done. Good luck to your friend.
