I have BCBS of Nebraska, they will only cover $10,000. This amount only includes the surgery, and hospital stay. Pretty much anything that happens the day of, and anything else that happens while in the hospital. So of course, I have to pay all follow ups, all pre surgeon visits, all testing, complications, etc. I'm wondering if anyone knows low cost places, because I'm not completely self pay. I would prefer not to go to Mexico, i'm so happy for those who have and had successful results... I'm just not able to. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

I have Empire BCBS. When I had the EGD Memorial Hermann called and said that I had to pay a co-pay of $122.00. Well, for some reason a month ago, I received a refund in the mail.

Believe it or not, my only co-pay at the time of surgery for my doctor. I expect to get a bill from the anesthesiologist, I haven't heard from the hopsital yet.

I wish you all the best.

Once you have a clear understanding with your insurance about what is covered and what isn't, and a list of approved surgeons - set up visits with a couple of the surgeons and negotiate what you could get for the amount of coverage your insurance would pay. In other words, negotiate! It might seem odd - to negotiate for something like surgery - but WLS is a competitive market right now. I wouldn't consider doing this with surgeons I didn't think were top-notch - don't go to a newbie who is learning the procedure - hoping for a good deal. You will never know if you could have gotten a better deal for your surgery unless you ask. (I am one of those sick folks who actually enjoy negotiating when I buy cars). :P

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
