Sleeve around your stomach ?

Recommended Posts

I just joined this website because my husband and I are looking into getting the Gastric Sleeve Surgery done, and wanted some information on what it is exactly. I have been reading comments, and one of them said, "My Sleeve rocks", does this mean there is like a sleeve around your stomach? Forgive me for asking stupid questions, just trying to understand what its all about.

"The sleeve" they are referring to is the stomach itself. In this surgery you're stomach is cut and a large portion of it is removed. The stomach that is left roughly is the shape of a banana and looks like a sleeve. It works because it restricts the amount you can it. Many people chose this over the band because there is no foreign object in the body.

You definitely came to the right place for information! Good luck on your journey :) Maybe you will be on the losers bench soon :)

Boy, you brought back memories! When I first heard of the sleeve, I thought it was a sleeve around the stomach too! Google Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy and you'll get lots of good info. Basically, it's called a sleeve because during the operation about 80% of your stomach is removed and the remainder is stapled along the side where they cut. You wind up with a sleeve-shaped stomach. Looks kinda like a long shirt sleeve.

Basically it is stomach stapling. Just browse internet you will find some utube videos. They take a staple gun and go down middle of stomach making it smaller than remove the outside portion. Surgery only takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Unlike bypass you have no obstruction going into stomach and have full intestinal track to absorb Vitamins and minerals.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
