Hairballs or Hairy Throat???

Recommended Posts

K so I was sleeved on the 26th of August, and for about the last week or so I have this feeling like I have a ton of hair in the back of my throat, I have looked in the mirror and I don't see anything. My hubby said he cant see any hair, but I FEEL it in there. No matter how much I sip and sip and sip I can't get the feeling to go away. It makes me gag if I think about it too long. Does anyone else have this? I thought maybe it was something to do with just me, but I have heard of weird things happening after the surgery so just wondering if anyone else experiences it.

I know it's weird, but thanks in advance for the input!!

Sarah

Ok I feel phelm at the bk of my throat constantly but not anything that feels like hair. I hock up stuff all day, its really disgusting. It grosses out my hubby lol. I was sleeved on july 20th and I remember reading people having the "slimies". I think that's what it is but not sure, just wish it would pass.

Yes! I get this! I think it is phlegm but wow does it drive me nuts!! I have been having some major drainage for about 2 weeks and the hair in my throat feeling really gets me gagging. I am 4 weeks out now and really hoping it stops soon. I bought some zyrtec-D in hopes of drying the drainage up.

Mine really isn't drainage or anything. I can't cough stuff up even when I try, but it feels like I have a long hair or something stuck in the back of my throat. I took a zyrtec today too, but it didn't really help. Gonna take it again tomorrow and see if I can try to get over it.

I had this for a few weeks. It was a sensation but no hair there. I think it lasted for 2-3 weeks before subsiding. I also was also very sensitive to smells. There are a few changes your body goes through after this surgery. I am now 10 weeks out and feel normal now. For the first 4-5 weeks you will notice strange things as your body adjusts to the new stomach.

I've had a phlegmy-type thing going on for a few weeks. I'm driving people at work nuts because I keep clearing my throat! I hope it subsides soon.

Hey -

I know what you mean. I was sleeved last Friday (Sep 2) and that feeling in my case was from the tube they put down your throat. I think the tube scraped a bit of skin enough to partially tear away thus every time I swallow I can feel that. It finally went away this evening after I drank a shake so must have dislodged it. That could be scraping that you are feeling. Good luck. Reb

I too had an ichy throat for about 3 weeks. My doctor said it was from the scope that they did after my surgery to check the incisions. Nothing seem to help it and I was constantly drinking and coughing. I just woke up one day and it was almost gone.

Also, I was very, very sensitive to smells for the first 3 months. I am still sensitive to them, but not as bad. I still have issues with my tastes changing. Sometimes I can eat certain things and they sit fine while other days they upset my stomach so badly that I never want to eat those things again. I know that my tastes have changed tremendously since surgery 6 months ago. I still can't eat hamburger or beef. I am allergic to most fish so my diet consists mostly of chicken and a very small amount of pork. However, since my life no longer revolves around food, I am OK with this.

And then at 4 months, the hair loss got me good! I lost a huge amount of hair, or at least what I thought was a lot. I now have little hairs all over my head and when I rub my hands on my scalp, it reminds me of a porcupine. Some are about an inch long and sticking up on top of my head. The good news is that the Hair loss has subsided, the bad news is that most of the sticking up hairs on my head are gray!

I keep waiting for the next adventure to start! Who knows what's next, but I don't care. I love my sleeve! You will too! Hang in there and know that this, too, will pass and a new "issue" will probably arise. The great thing is that there are a lot of wonderful people on here who can relate to you and give you great advice on how to survive each one!

I had this after surgery as well and it lasted for about a month. It seemed like it was going further back into my throat before finally subsiding totally. WEIRD feeling and yes, it felt like there was fur or hair on my tongue!

I'm almost 4 months post op and the smell thing still drives me nuts... but it's not nearly as bad as it used to be... much less gag inducing now!!!

The hairy sensation is probably just from the intubation during surgery... and your mouth became so dry that it became irritated... give it a week or two and it will go away... If you have been clearing your throat, stop doing so because you are only irritating your esophagus more.

If you had thrush, you would notice red and/or white splotches inside your mouth, especially around the inside of your cheek (wherever food would rub against them)... I've had thrush countless times from my brochiodialators, and that is the first place you can see it... Your mouth ends up looking like it was rubbed with sandpaper and there is a gritty texture on your cheeks inside and inside behind your lips..

Hope it goes away soon!!

Wow I'm so glad I'm not alone!! I have had a super sense of smell since the surgery too!!! It seems to be a bit better today, I don't feel like a cat lol. I definitely don't have thrush, so I'm guessing it must be from the intubation. My doc did say that the anesthesia can cause a super schnazz so I wasn't even thinking about that, but I guess the hairball feeling makes sense. I can't wait to progress!!! So sick of Protein shakes!!!!

If the drainage gets really bad, Mucinex makes a liquid version that is great. I actually left work early today because I was hacking so bad. I got a note from the doctor that said he recommended the Mucinex. I took it at 4 PM and I am feeling better than I have in 2 days!

I am so glad I am not the only one feeling like a hair is stuck in my throat. My husband thinks I am crazy because it was all I talked about last night. It is absolutely driving me crazy. Funny, I am only two weeks out from the surgery and such a small thing is driving me crazy. You would think the liquid diet would be more bothersome!! Did you ever get any relief? How long did it take, or what did you do?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
