I refer to the mayo Clinic a lot for certain health information, this is what they have to say about colon cleansing. I'd keep your money in your bank account.

Colon cleansing: Helpful or harmful?

clear.gifI've read many articles on colon cleansing as the root of all ills. I don't believe it. Generally, colon cleansing sounds like a good way to clean toxins from your body. What do you think?

Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist Michael Picco, M.D., and colleagues answer select questions from readers.

Answer

Doctors don't recommend colon cleansing for better health or to prevent disease. The only appropriate use for colon cleansing is in preparation for a medical examination of the colon.

Your colon normally eliminates waste material and bacteria and absorbs Water and sodium to maintain your body's Fluid and electrolyte balance. Some colon-cleansing programs disrupt this balance and can be harmful by causing dehydration and salt depletion.

To help prevent Constipation, eat plenty of Fiber. The Institute of Medicine offers these daily recommendations:

  • 38 grams for men and 25 grams for women 50 and younger
  • 30 grams for men and 21 grams for women 51 and older

Also, drink plenty of Water, which helps Fiber work more effectively

I would never try a colon cleanse post-banding Alexandra, but my paperwork does state once a week Metamucil one tsp. in one glass of orange juice, so not sure all docs are in agreement on this one. They also suggest adding the powered fiber to everything we cook which seems like a great idea. I think the Metamucil is only if you absolutely have to use it and not much at that. What problems do you think it causes.

One teaspoon of Metamucil once a week is hardly likely to cause any problems, but it's also hardly likely to help in such a small amount. The problem it and other bulking supplements might cause is that they might thicken up in the pouch, before moving through the stoma. And once they're thickened, they are not likely to go through the stoma anytime soon. Just about all recommendations for post-band patients I've ever seen stipulate non-bulking supplements for this reason. Benefiber is widely recommended, and it can be taken as often as needed. I add about a tablespoon to my morning coffee if I feel it's needed, and it works beautifully and gently.

It's not a colon-cleanse sort of thing, it's just to relieve Constipation. (Many bandsters complain of constipation once they have good restriction, because there's so little bulk in our diets.)

Yes I took the mineral oil

Though so:phanvan , that is why you had to run to the bathroom. Oil can be rather violent to the system. But so can fruit for that matter. One time when I was a kid, omg i thought i was dying.....my mom asked me what I ate......lol a whole box of Raisinettes (back in the day when I was only 105 lbs...lol) didn't know raisins and chocolate both act as laxatives- I never did that again!!:nervous

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
