How Much Walking Did You Do in the Beginning?

Recommended Posts

Today I am 13days post-op. I rely on a home treadmill as it is still too hot for me to walk outdoors.

I know everyone is different, but I was wondering how far everyone walked when they were first out of surgery?

I can manage about 15-20 min right now at about a 3.0 clip and a 2% incline. Then EVERYTHING starts to kinda ache. I think I may still have some gas trapped in my shoulders as I have NEVER experienced shoulder pain in the past.

I feel bad as I used to the the go to mover and shaker around here. Now I am not pulling my weight. no pun intended. I want to be back to fighting strength and speed.

I had this same feeling with my c-section. I was ordered on bed rest and it darn near killed me.

I am in Houston and was sleeved August 10. The entire month of August we had 2 days under 100 degrees, so I didn't really start exercising until this past weekend (3.5 weeks out). I don't have a treadmill so I enjoy walking outside. I was able to take about a 20 minute walk up the street to some shops in my neighborhood and walk around the shops and then walk back. I did get a little gassed out on the way back and could feel the lactic acid building up in my muscles.

That all being said, I was a competitive shotput thrower before I got really heavy (part of why I got heavy is that I threw out my shoulder and was used to the ridiculous diet that accompanied hours of workouts and weight sessions every week) and I can tell you the most important thing to do when exercising or lifting is to listen to your body. In general, you want to go up to the point where your body is at it's limit and then try to push it maybe 30 seconds more each day, or 2 more reps if you are lifting, whatever. Most people who are in our situation (overweight) have a laziness about them (myself included). We work to the point where we thing we "can't take it anymore" and just stop. You need to push through. The next day it will be a little more, and a little more, and a little more.

Good luck!

I exercised A LOT pre-op, so after my surgery I was ready to go! The first week I only walked my neighborhood because I was so sore and tired.

After that first week, I was doing my 1 1/2 -2 miles again. I worked up to my 5 mile walks/jogs I do now at 4 months out.

Do what you can, but don't over exert yourself. Work up to getting more in as you feel comfortable with doing more. Everyone is different and advances differently!

Kelly :D

I didn't start exercising till 7 or 8 weeks out. My doc gave me the go ahead after 4 weeks though, but I wanted to give myself a little extra healing time. Now, 4 months out I do Fitness Kickboxing, Strength Training and walking.

I actually waited until about 4 months post op before I was back full steam ahead, and believe you me, I'm a totally crazy workout nut.

I started walking again pretty much immediately though. I was up to about 30 minutes at around 1 month out. But that's pretty much all would do all day.

My advice, you just had a very major surgery. Keep that in mind as you're progressing. If you're feeling achy after 20 minutes, then that's when you should stop for the time being. But get back up and do it again, perhaps later in the day and definitely the next day. You will be back up and ready to go in no time. The time really does flash by quickly. I'm already going on a year out next Thursday! :D And me taking 4 whole months to get back to 100%+ on my workouts means nothing as far as me being a failure, because that I'm definitley NOT!

All the best to you. Heal first, then work on getting back to true workout form.

At 6 weeks out, I can walk 1.5 miles in 20 minutes. Don't know if that's good or bad but I try to do a little more each day. It's been so hot here in Dallas that I've been going at 7:00am and walking at the mall. I've met a lot of nice people that also walk that time of day.

My goal is to walk 30 minutes by the end of next week.

I'm 4.5 weeks post and walk 3.25 miles (almost) every night. The first time I tried walking, for exercise that is, was 2 weeks post. I made it a mile and realized it was catching up to me fast. I turned around and about 1/2 way home didn't think I was going to make it ...things were cramping, my stomach hurt, I had zero energy all of the sudden, etc. Needless to say, I eased back into from there.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
