Hi!

My name is Talia. I had my surgery 12/20/2010. My journey started May 20th 2010, my first seminar about the surgery to get the packet and process started.

MAY 25th Medical records retrieved

JUN 2nd Nutrition consult

JUN 3rd Consult with surgeon

JUN 9th Lab work completed

JUN 11th Additional medical records retrieved

JUN 14th Psych evaluation completed

JUN 17th sleep study done

JUN 22nd Insurance submission

JUN 28th Insurance rejection ( 6month supervised diet required)

Supervised visits on 6/1, 7/30, 8/26, 9/27, 10/25, 11/18

OCT 21 changed surgery type from lap band to gastric sleeve

NOV 19th insurance submission

DEC 6th insurance approval

DEC 9th appointment with surgeon and surgery date

DEC 20th surgery

DEC 22nd left hospital

DEC 27 returned to work

During this time I was so focused on having the surgery and getting everything in and managing school, being a mommy and supporting my household that I never truly prepared myself for all the mental changes I would go through. I have had challenges with the surgery. I body healed fine but due to an obstruction I was unable to eat a vast majority of foods that were on the list and had to seek guidance from a GI specialist to assist. Needless to say some days have been better than others. I started at 293 pre- op and stand before you post-op at 173 on 9/3/2011. I’ve lost 120 lbs in about an 8 month time frame. That’s great!! Not too bad you say!! But I must admit I have had a hard time adjusting to the changes. I am an African American woman whose family is obese. They have had a hard time adjusting to the changes thus constantly have me second guess whether or not I'm on the right track. Even my BF at time expresses concern.; In my culture it natural to have some "Thickness " to you....lol but I not longer have hardly any "cushion" as my BF put it. Any way I’m very happy you have found this site and look forward to speaking with you all and asking question I have as far as Vitamins and exercise etc. Please feel free to ask any question as I am more thank willing to share.

Be Blessed!!

Talia C.

HI Talia,

Oh my gosh, 120 in 8 months time, WOW! That is such a huge accomplishment. Congrats! I hope 8 months out my numbers are similar to yours. (I am being sleeved on 9/26)

I can imagine it is quite an adjustment getting used to your new size - my husband has said he likes some cushion too. I think what is most important is how we feel in our bodies, if we feel good we will be happy and everything will align - right? Atleast that is what I'm telling myself.

Best to you and nice to meet you.

Teri

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
