Need Physician Referral Santa Barbara-LA Area

Recommended Posts

I am in Santa Barbara, and have no idea how to pick a doctor for a Vertical Sleeve. I am willing to travel, but it seems most surgeons have done mostly Roux n Y or Lapbands. Can anyone recommend a surgeon who has already been through the procedure? I am worried about picking someone with not enough experience.

I'm in SoCal (in the Valley,) but went with Dr. Rabkin in San Francisco. While not based down here, he does have a presence in Ventura where there are support group meetings (tomorrow evening, for that matter) and an office where they do some pre-op and follow-up appointments, so most of the work beyond the actual surgery itself can be done locally. His CV over on ObesityHelp lists that he has done about 90 VSGs and 1500 DSs (which include a VSG as part of the procedure,) so he's one of the more experienced VSG guys out there.

What is a DS?

The Duodenal Switch - a WLS procedure that starts with a VSG, usually leaving a somewhat larger stomach than we get with a standalone VSG, and adding some intestinal rerouting to restrict the absorption of fats. Of the mainstream WLS procedures, it generally offers the best initial weight loss and long term weight maintenance, but as with all of these procedures, comes with its' own set of compromises.

Dr. Aileen Takahashi (Association of South Bay Surgeons, Torrance, CA) did my surgery at Torrance Memorial 4 months ago. She is an amazing surgeon....she is an absolute perfectionist and takes her job VERY seriously. There are a ton of hoops to jump through but I think that is actually a good thing....she wants to make sure you're serious and ready for surgery. Oh, and Torrance Memorial is a Bariatric Center of Excellence....and the care I got there was phenomenal!!!

Good Luck

Welcome SBSheila, I live in Morro Bay and I chose Dr. Cirangle at http://www.lapsf.com/dr-cirangle-your-bariatric-doctor-for-weight-loss-surgery.php. He is in SF and has done over 1700 VSG's. He sees patients in Templeton, 20 min. from my home. Well worth it not to have to drive.

Dr. Billy in Ventura is amazing! I went to one of his seminars and he did one of my friend's lap bands.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
