KristinaRN 54 Posted September 5, 2011 I am 12 days out from surgery and feeling really good. My only concern is that I still feel true physical hunger. I know it can take awhile for the ghrelin to completely get out of your system, and I am still on full liquids so that makes a difference, but I am HUNGRY! Those of you whose hunger is now resolved, about how long after surgery did it take??? Thanks! ETA: I am taking a PPI, I take Prilosec 20 mg once a day. kellyw74 258 Posted September 5, 2011 This was the ONE thing I hoped would go away after my surgery, but it didn't. I was on Nexium and did find that switching to Prilosec at 2 months helped ALOT!! I am a little over 4 months out now and I do still get hungry, but I am not STARVING all of the time like I was before. If you are not on a PPI, get on one and if you are taking one, you may need to switch. It makes a big difference. Kelly
M2G 1,836 Posted September 5, 2011 Praying yours goes away soon! Mine was instantly gone, I haven't felt hunger since my surgery 10+ months ago.... I also didn't take a PPI before OR after surgery. I don't know if I'm just lucky or what, but my hubby is sleeved and in the exact same boat...no hunger, no PPI.
Indymom 132 Posted September 5, 2011 I haven't really felt any 'real' hunger since surgery, only in my head. I hope yours resolves soon, and I also suggest the PPI if you're not on one.
amy terese 3 Posted September 5, 2011 i also have not been hungary per say... i still see a pizza and think hmmm i could down 10 slices but then when i really think about doing it i want to puke....hope it gets better for you soon... also these eating habits have been with us our whole lives, the head hunger we always will have to battle i am told. just like a 10 year post smoker smells a cig and will still get a urge..... its so hard... but we have our sleeve and each other..... make a list iif stuff you can do instead when it hits you... hmmm i will go for a walk, or pop on Facebook, or make my kids give me a back rub or what ever.... or how about a quickie with your hubby, or significant other ! of course then they would never want your hunger pains to go away !!! hahaha good luck keep us posted!!! KristinaRN 54 Posted September 5, 2011 I am taking a PPI, I am on Prilosec 20 mg once per day. Also, this is definitely true physical hunger, NOT head hunger. My stomach gets that empty feeling and starts growling.
alma95 0 Posted September 5, 2011 I feel your pain. I feel like I am starving all of the time. I was originally on Prilosec and then switched to Prevacid about a week ago and it seems even worse than it was before. I feel physically sick becaue of the hunger. wishes 125 Posted September 5, 2011 Yeah, I am starting to think I won't be one of those people who isn't hungry. My tummy is soooo growling and I am taking my acid reducer as soon as I wake up.
janinemaire 7 Posted September 6, 2011 I'm 10 months from surgery and some weeks I don't feel hungry and some weeks I do. It took 5 months after surgery to not feel hungry all the time and even when i do feel hungry I barely eat 850 calories. Honestly I prefer my hungry days than the days I take one bite and I'm full. One thing that really helps is to eat every 3 hours. I try to eat 5 or 6 small meals a day because I get full so fast. Don't let getting hungry upset you just need to learn to work with it. Head hungry I feel is the real problem for many people. Good luck.
FishingNurse 1,211 Posted September 6, 2011 Kristina I felt like that too at first. I still get hungry but luckily I eat something small like 1 string cheese and I'm full an satisfied for hours! Once you get solids it really makes a difference.
