Just got the okay from Kaiser to have WLS. They want to do the RNY bypass instead of the sleeve because of the success rate with keeping the weight off long term. They also said that because my weakness is sugar, it would be better at keeping me on track... I'm guessing because of the dumping that people experience after eating sugary foods.

I was hoping not to mess with my intestines and keep my plumbing intact, but I also don't want to have the sleeve and end up having to get that revised into the RNY because it isn't working for me long term.

Has anyone else here had their DR. tell them something like this?? Kaiser said they only do sleeves on a few select patients. mellow.gif

Strange. My doctor said he is doing mostly only sleeves now. I told him I was concerned I wasn't choosing the right surgery and he said he absolutely wanted me to have the sleeve. I'm Kaiser Fresno

Hey there...I'm new to this website as of today, but your blog caught my attention. I am also a kaiser patient in So. Cal and I am scheduled for my VSG on 9/08. I'm anxious/excited to say the least. I attended all the Kaiser classes and I heard them say that same thing that you said your people told you. My husband had the RNY in May/2010. I saw him experience "dumping syn" and I don't wan't to do that. He says it does keep him from eating sweets though and he was a sugar addict!! I opted for the VSG and I am praying that it is the right choice. I too, like you, don't want my intestines re routed!! The surgeon I'm going to says he does more sleeves than RNY now, but reccomends RNY for diabetics! Luckily I don't have that...yet?!! Good Luck to you...hope this helped out.

Also a Kaiser So Cal patient and I started out wanting the band but my surgeon advised against it and recommended VSG instead. After researching this I too decided it was the best choice. RNY was never an option I would consider...ultimately it is your decision. You know yourself best.

I to have Kaiser in Fresno. My surgeon prefers the sleeve also. If you want the sleeve try to get switched to Fresno Kaiser. No matter what surgery you get though. It is not a fix all. You will have to modify your eating habits for this to be a success. Once you see the results, it will be much easier to change.

Respectfully,

Joe Lopez

The doctor I saw at Kaiser told me that I would be having the RNY because of my weight and that I would have to have a really good reason to get the VSG instead. I went to the surgeon and he said that he felt the sleeve would be the better option for me and he was right. Also, some people do experience dumping with sweets after the sleeve.

I was also told by a Kaiser So Cal doctor that he recommended that I get the RNY because I had a lack of Vitamin D but I said "chale tamale"...My surgeon asked me what surgery I wanted and I said VSG and he said it was a good decision...Im scheduled to have my surgery on 09/16 with Inland Valley Medical Center...I also attended the options program with Kaiser and finished back in 02/2011 but stalled a surgery date since I wanted to make extra money at work...Best of luck in your decision...!!!

Don't let them talk you into a surgery you don't want! Stand your ground. Do your research. The results of VSG are very similar to RNY in terms of EWL and long term success, except VSG is newer so "long term" is sort of relative at this point. I'm Kaiser too and what they don't mention in classes is that the malabsorption of calories in RNY only lasts for two years while the malabsorption of Vitamins lasts forever. That was really the deal breaker for me.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
