I did it, now i'm scared

Recommended Posts

Hi! My name is Roz, I am a 43 year old mother of 3 from NY. I had my surgery on July 20, 2011with Dr. Vamulapalli at Montefiore Medical Center. My surgery went well but I had to stay an extra day in the hospital because I wasn't able to drink enough liquids. On surgery day I was 248 and today, a month later I am 223. I thought that i had prepared myself for life after surgery but it is nothing like I anticipated. All of the sugar free drinks that I loved while preparing for surgery now leave a weird metal taste in my mouth and I was even having trouble with Water and Protein. There was a week that I threw up everyday, but I think that I may have been eating too fast and once I drank a little to soon. Because I could only eat about an once every few hours without the protein in between my puree stage has been extended. I'm still not eating verymuch but I can drink water now. I haven't lost any weight in the past 2 weeks or so so I'm a little scared. I worked out a little last night and that went well. I'm just really nervous and have not idea what is going on. I hope things get better.

I know exactly what you mean! After surgery, I was in shock about how much of a change my life was. I never realized how many food commercials were on TV until I was laying on the couch the week after surgery, thinking I want that!!!! Over and over. I will tell you that it has gotten so much easier when I started feeling better. I feel wonderful! If I don't eat right, I don't feel well either. They are related. Also I had gone 5 days without any weight loss and it was because I was not eating enough. I upped my Protein to make sure I was getting at least 60grams a day and keep my calories between 600-800 a day. And I went back to losing 1 to 2lbs a day. Eat more protein or do Protein Drinks. I have whey Protein from GNC with 20g protein, 2g carbs and 2g of fat. Only 3 a day and ur at the minimum. I hope this helps!!! :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
