New Job, Time Off for Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey All,

Hopefully I will be starting a new job soon and I am also expecting to be sleeved in Oct or Early Nov. That wont be 90 days of work and I wont have any vacation time (obviously)....what should I tell the job? Because there is NO WAY I am postponing surgery...Can they fire me? Being out of work this long (4 months) I am anxious to work again, however, I have been waiting on surgery forever!!! I am too close to wait!!!

If you are hired with the first 90 days being a probationary period, your employer can legally terminate your employment. The chances of this happening may depend upon the type of work you do and if you can help ensure that your employer's business does not suffer losses while you are gone. As the top director at my work, I always appreciate employees who think about the company during times of their personal need for time off. Not everyone would agree with me, but I think telling your direct supervisor that you had a pre-planned personal medical procedure, and you need to keep the appointment, but would like to work with him/her to minimize any inconvenience to them is one way to approach this.

If it came to a choice between VSG and having a job... These days, 4 months being out of work is nothing compared to a lot of people. Congrats on your new job! Your found one quickly. :D

Veda has great advice. Be honest but you do not have to be specific on type of medical procedure. Before you have this conversation know how much time you plan on taking off. Talk to your surgeons office and find out what you can expect to be back performing. Doc's office will need to know type of work you do...desk job, lifting it, or standing for long periods to give you a somewhat normal timeframe.

When you discuss let boss know that you have a medically necessary procedure...that their insurance will not be paying for, that is scheduled for date of XXXX. You will be off of work for XX days and back ready to perform with a smile on your face.

Good luck and congrats on both a new job and VSG!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
