Can the band tear loose

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a 9.75 band and had my first fill a week ago thursday, 1.8 ccs. I have been having problems consuming even liquids like tea and Water, I get the mucus and slime and it comes up. I can't hardly get anything down during the day but have been able to drink slim fast and a small amount of mashed potatos at night time. However tonight I have not been able to keep anything down. I am worried because I have been throwing up 5-6 times per day and tonight I threw up extra hard. So hard that it caused pain in my chest, neck and face and down my arms. Can the band tear away or anything like that when I throw up that hard. I hate to say it but it hurt so bad I cried and I consider myself pretty tough. Does this go away and how long does it take for the adjustment to the fill.

Please help I was not worried until the last few days and I am begining to get scared. I don't want to rupture something from all this gagging and vomiting.

My doctor is about 6 hours away and I live in a small town so I can't run back and forth to get fills or unfills very easily.

You are too tight!!.. please see your doctor and advise him of this problem. YES! The band can 'slip' due to this type of problem.

Stay with liquids a minimum of 24 hrs, maybe longer. Try warm liquids, slowly.. Please keep us posted!

Get on the phone, gas the car, and get back to the surgeon's office. If you can't easily swallow liquids, you're filled too much and excessive vomiting could cause a slip that might lead to band removal. Don't wait to call!

Get an unfill, nothing else will help if you are that tight...good luck..

They are all right, you need an unfill ASAP. The band can't really "tear loose" but it can slip from a lot of forceful vomiting.

Yep. If you don't take care of it right away, you could get some swelling which could lead to needing a complete unfill for several weeks, then going back for a fill later. Until you can get to the dr., stay on liquids. You can mix slim fast shakes to make hot chocolate (not real good during the summer). Continue to get your Water in, slow small sips. I just went through this and because I was losing weight, tried to just wait it out and ended up dehydrated and needing a complete unfill. I just got another fill (gained 7 lbs). You'll be fine but please don't wait, it ends up being more time consuming and expensive.

I agree, call your dr asap. I was having trouble getting myself to drink much for fear of throwing up and wound up with a bad case of bladder infection only 5 days after my banding (banded 7-6-06). Please take care of yourself.

You are definitely too tight. Have you arranged for an unfill yet? BTW, 1.8ccs is very agressive for a first fill!

I say call from the car. I would be on the road. Worse case scenario you lose 2 full tanks of gas.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
