Phillips Milk Of Magnesia works overnight, the only thing that worked for me and I'm 6 weeks post-op.

I am trying to avoid getting into the habit of taking any sort of chemical laxative. I've been taking psyllium husk capsules for a couple of weeks (anywhere between 3-6 per day) and they don't seem to be helping much. I just went for more than a week without going AT ALL!

This can't be good for me. I know this happens sometimes. What do others do to try to stay more regular?

I am four weeks out and have only pooped twice. The first time was 16 days post op. The doctor didn't seem concerned. I tried Milk of Magnesia (it's nasty) and Miralax (it doesn't taste). I try to drink my Water and i don't have Constipation. But I will try everyone's suggestions.

Thanks for bringing this up.

I agree about the taste - cherry is what I use - just takes a couple of swallows but FYI the Miralax you have to use it several times before it works and for me I could taste the grit... but that's me. Not like there is a lot in your bowel but it need to learn to learn to have movements again on it's own.

I had the same problem for months. Tried Miralax (had a hard time making myself drink it since I could only get about 4 oz of Fluid down at a time), tried stool softeners and even resorted to actual laxatives when had no relief from metamucil. Then I found Fiber gummies. I love them. Two every night and I am like clockwork. They have like 30 calories. Well worth it for me.

I second the Magnesium!! It will make you GO! I would start out w/ a small dose 250mg then up to 500mg if the 250mg doesn't work. The pills are really cheap too. And it is a mineral, not a laxative.

I was in the same boat, but I read on one of these threads that Flax seed oil from Whole Foods helped someone. That same day I went and bought it, and..... IT WORKS let me tell you. I go everyday now and I've been using it for a week. It did take 2 days for it to start working, but its better than taking milk of magnesia every other day.

a little bit of licorice works, or kiwifruit. The doctor gave me something called lactulose but I've only had to take it twice in the last three weeks.

I am finding that about a 2cm long bit of licorice each day is working wonders :)

I am 8 months out and I still have problems. I'll admit. I take a lax once a month. I east Activia everyday and take Mylax 3 times a week. Nothing seems to work with me. The lax makes me feel like at least I know something is in there and coming out. I will try the flaxseed this weekend. I consider myself a slow loser and I think it has a lot with me not going weekly. Thanks for the topic and tips.

Using laxatives will eventually make the problem worse because your body will get used to them. Please try the magnesium, it has eliminated this problem for me. Pun intended :)

Why does licorice make you go?

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
