Tried a diet soda today....

Recommended Posts

:P

So diet soda is the only item I've really, really missed. So I deicded that I'd give one a shot. First, I only drank about 2 ounces, if that. Second, I don't see what the big deal is. Saying that, let me add that I am a sipper. I am drinking it for the bite, not because I am thirsty. If it's not got a lot of carbonation and is just a sweet taste, I don't want it. So I've never swigged it down. And with sipping that little bit as we rode home from work did nothing to me. No gas, discomfort pain, nothing. And I might add that I am weaning off the PPI and am only taking one every 3rd day or as needed. Last, I'm so glad I did this. I've been sooo missing it. Now I don't. It had a very chemical taste to me now. It wasn't horrid, but it wasn't anything to go back to wanting every day. And now that I've been away from it, it was nothing to miss.

I'm not recommending anyone try this as it's against doctor's orders in almost all cases. But I just thought I'd share my experience on being a rebel. ---basically, it was a disappointing dud and I'm very happy it was!

Oh, and I"m almost 5 months post op.

Thanks for sharing. I'm almost 3 mos out and was tempted to try a diet coke today. I decided against it, and now reading your post I'm glad about my decision. Sometimes I think eating or drinking anything "forbidden" will become a slippery slope toward a full on chocolate-donut-eating-extravaganza!! I figure the longer I can hold out the better, I hope I can make it to 5 mos like you!:D

Been drinking 2 or 3 cans a week for months and have still managed to lose 160 pounds.

IMHO, they cause no issues at all, all the talk about bubbles stretching the sleeve are just nonsense. Now, the other excuse of triggering sweet cravings MIGHT be valid. If you can handle it and don't suddenly want to pig out on sweets than go for it - IN MODERATION. Most colas / sodas are pretty acidic and may cause some tummy upset although I drink a bit of diet Canada Dry Ginger Ale and it settles my stomach pretty well, MOM used to give it to us when we had upset tummies as kids.

And again IANAD.

I am not sure but it was at least 2 or 3 months out. I used to slug a can of soda in 5 minutes, the first couple post-op took me an hour to down, now it takes me 20 -30 minutes and I actually ENJOY it more because I stop and actually taste it rather then let it slide down the hatch.

Thanks for the input. Thats when I figured I could have a few sips! :-)

I think IMHO, that they just don't want you to drink soda because it really isn't good for you, period.

I quit drinking the stuff 10 years before my surgery, so not a problem for me, but before that, I use to drink 6 diet pepsi's a day! So I get it!!

Kelly :)

Carbonation doesn't bother me one bit. I'm not a soda drinker, but I drink a few beers every weekend with no problem. And still losing steadily. :)

:D An Mic Ultra is my next test.

I'm not too concerned about liquids leading me down the garden path because I absolutely cannot drink anywhere near food. And it shocks me that I don't care. I thought it would drive me nuts. Now I'm sometimes 45 minutes out from food and suddenly go "oh, heck, I can drink again!"

I just don't have a connection between food and liquids anymore. It's sooo nice. And this surgery also seems to have cured my dry mouth. Don't know how or why, but thrilled to death about it.

I had some champagne! I had a spritzer! I can never drink a whole glass or can, but a couple of sips - I am also a rebel!

I started out trying some of that Bud Select 55 but it tasted like piss Water and I just started drinking regular Bud Light. I know it won't lead me down a bad road because I never drank much before. It's nice to have a normal life with my friends on the weekend if I want to have a few beers, though.

I know for me personally, I used diet soda to wash down my food. THAT is why diet soda is probably bad for me, because it allowed me to eat a lot more than I should. IMO, as long as I don't slip back to my old habits of drinking diet soda with food, I should be OK.

I do miss the carbonation, but I'll wait until my stomach heals. Carbonated Water probably should be a healthier alternative. I love my fancy Perrier Water :)

The thing with Carbonation is it kinda feels weird at first bc there is no room for the bubbles to float up in your stomach so you can burp easily. It's kinda uncomfortable at first, but if you take little sips instead of big guzzles you are fine. My doc did not forbid carbonation. Everything in moderation is his motto....aside from Ibuprofen...that is the only forbidden. I def wouldn't recommend sugared drinks, though, no empty calories allowed!

Interesting. Mine forbid aspirin but said ibuprofen was okay in moderation.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
