How long is the down time?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have another question. How long is the down time after surgery? My friend had a Roun E Y and was back to work that next week. Is it possible with a lap band?

I know the Dr said 4 weeks no work, but since I am the only breadwinner that scares me. My kids won't eat if I don't work! lol...

So what should I expect? I just got my date today (August 1st) so now my nerves are actually kicking in and I am so full of questions!

4 weeks??? That is ridiculous!!! More like 4-7 days!!!

Back to work after only one week after Roux N Y???? I never heard that!! Are you sure you don't have them mixed up? People I know who had gastric bypass were off work 6 weeks!

I felt better about 5-6 days out. My port still hurt for about 3 weeks, but I would have been able to get back to work after a long weekend if I had to. Guess it depends on what kind of job you have.

I was out for a week and a half, I would have been back w/in a wk but I work for a surgeon, and he wanted the extra precautions, as well as I hadnt taken anytime in like a yr, so he said I deserved it. My 3 aunts and 2 cousins had the Roux E Y, and all of them were back to work w/in 4-6wks depending on the jobs they had. But Ive never heard of anyone w/ the band needing that long, unless there were complications.

Unless you do a LOT of heavy lifting, I would think a week max would be about all you need off.

I took 2 weeks off and even though things were ok after 1 week - I needed that extra week to get over the lack of sleep I had from the first week - and also to gain back some energy!

Everyone is different and everyone reacts differently to surgery. (I had a bad reaction to the anethetics).

There was a gentleman in my support group who went back to work after 3 days.

Good luck

Tracy

I was banded Monday July 10th. If I hadn't been in Mexico and had a day of flying, I would bhave been back to work on Wednesday (light duty). This was way easier than I had anticipated.

Thanks all! That definately makes me feel better! I can deal with a week to 10 days.

And yes, she was back to work RIGHT away with a ROun En Y, but she is a hardcare chick...lol..a real estate agent too so I think she didn't have to do any lifting. But thanks for the reponses. I feel much better now!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
