Carb Intake after surgery

Recommended Posts

I am in week 3 post-op and have been keeping my food journal updated daily. My carb intake varies from 25-75 carbs a day, while getting close to my goal of 60-80 grams of Protein per day.

My dietician recommends well above that amount once I'm on a full diet again, but what is a good rule of thumb for the earlier stages of eating? I do not see anything in my doctor's nutrition guidelines regarding carbs this early out, only the typical Protein intake requirements. I have maintained the last few days and I want to make sure I'm not beginning to stall because of carb intake.

Does anyone know what a good amount of carbs (full carbs, regardless of net, Fiber, etc.) is a "healthy" amount to intake and maintain healthy weight loss in the early stages after surgery (weeks 2-8)?

I think this early out, we are taking in so few calories that fat and carbs don't have a very significant impact. I am getting quite a few carbs but it's because of pureed fruit, milk and some of the Protein Shakes I'm using. A lot of people have said 30-40 carbs a day is their target (and that's once they are on regular food). I'm probably getting 30+ a day now but in 2 weeks when I can add in meat, I expect to see my carbs drop significantly as I start to get more Protein from regular food.< /p>

I'm afraid of carbs and lose better when I avoid them. I stick to under 30 a day. It would be under 20 a day, often, if it weren't for all the carbs in my Vitamins. When I get closer to goal, I'll start adding some healthy carbs back in.

Before I was able to eat real Protein I ate a lot more carbs, including potatoes with a cheese sauce. Now I couldn't imaging eating that because it would bother my stomach. Also I didn't start journaling my food intake until I was around 6 weeks. Than I started having about 40 or less total carbs, now at 9 months I have about 60 or less. I'm sure your fine and your doing great with your Protein. Good luck.

I can only speak for myself of course, but my sleeve is doing exactly what I wanted it to do. I eat what my family eats, Protein first of course, but still get to have what they are having just lots, lots less. I am still losing about 1 lb every 2 days. I feel full and satisfied because I don't deprive myself. I do stay at about 800 calories a day. I'm 9 wks out and have lost 45 lbs so I love, love, love my sleeve. I don't count carbs but I really don't crave sweets and breads like I use to. I haven't even started exercising yet so I can't wait to see the results next week when I do. Good luck. The first month is the hardest.

I aim for under 40 carbs/day. Realistically some days is lower and a few are higher. Like last night we went out to a Japanese hibachi place for DH's birthday and I ate some of the Salad Dressing and the yummy pink sauce with my 4 shrimp. But I find that if I keep it under 40 my cravings are under control. Today I am craving that sweet sauce again, but I will live through it!

I eat about 100 carbs per day. I find that lowering my carbs actually stalls my weight loss. If you use a program to log your food, such as my fitness pal.com they actually tell you what a healthy adult should be consuming daily, even to lose weight. You'd be surprised at what's recommended. Having said that, everyone is different, and you should follow your NUT's advice and find what number works for you. Have fun experimenting!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
