I am hypothyroid and take Synthroid (100 mcg) daily. I normally take it first thing in the morning and I have been fine after surgery. I was recently given direction to take my Nexxium twice daily (morning and evening). My doctor said I can't take Synthroid with a PPI because it causes problems with absorption.

So this morning I take my Nexxium when I wake up and figure I will take my Synthroid about an hour before lunch. By 930 AM I was sweating profusely and felt like I was having a hot flash! The RN who works with me asked if I had taken my Synthroid. I took it at at 10 AM and within 20 minutes the sweating and hot flash was back under control.

Since I hadn't thought about it, I figured I would post for the other Hypo's out there after surgery.

Humm, I don't know about those symptoms but I sure know you can't take any of the acid reducers for the next 4 hours after you take your thyroid meds. I take mine at 7:30 and have my Prilosec 4 hours later. Same thing with Calcium and Iron supplements. They cause absorption problems if you have them less than 3 or 4 hours after your thyroid med.

Hope it helps...

I have been taking my thyroid meds and my prilosec at the same time every morning for the last 4 months. Is there confirmation somewhere these shouldn't be taken together? I'd like to read up on it.

Thanks,

Heather

Hi FloraBama,

Yes, I have my compounded at a pharmacy too! Since the beginning i had to have them compounded since I had a reaction to the binding in the regular pills. I stopped taking the Armour when I had my surgery and have not resumed. I have Hashimotos. I will be seing my MD soon and will resume the meds.

What was your experience?! I'm so sorry to hear about your reaction!!!!! Hope you're doing well now!!!!

I didn't know about the Synthroid/PPI malabsorption issue at all. Fortunately I take Synthroid in the morning and Nexium before bedtime...

Yes, you can ask and google. There are quite a few foods that cause absorption problems, including the following:

VEGETABLES

  • BROCCOLI
  • BRUSSEL SPROUTS
  • CABBAGE
  • CASSAVA ROOT
  • CAULIFLOWER
  • KALE
  • MUSTARD GREENS
  • RADISHES
  • RUTABAGAS
  • SPINACH
  • TURNIPS

FRUITS

  • STRAWBERRIES
  • PEACHES
  • PEARS

LEGUMES/SEEDS/GRAINS

  • MILLET
  • SOYBEANS
  • PEANUTS
  • PINENUTS

OILS

  • CANOLA

you can also google some more.

Its not like you WILL DIE OR YOUR THYROID WILL SHUT DOWN IF YOU EAT THEM, but then again, you want to lose weight right? Then you need to keep your thyroid working at it's best.

This is just mere google-ing. But I have talked to my doctor about it too.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
