what were you able to eat at 7 weeks out.

Set my surgery date for Sept. 8, and my birthday is Oct. 28th. So I will be around 7 weeks out. My family usually takes me out to dinner for my birthday. So I'm wondering what were ya'll able to eat at 7 or 8 weeks out?

Hi Sarah,

I was going out to eat around 5 weeks out......choose soft foods that will go down easy tho......suggestions like...fish, chicken (must be tender tho). you basically want Protein foods, and you will have lots of choices in restaurants, you just need to remember to avoids foods that are breaded or in a creamy sauce.....

When I would go out to dinner, my hubby and i would split. he lets me pick the meal, and I would take about 15% and leave him 85%. My dr. instructs me to eat protien first and veggie last. (protien is the most important) You wont have any room for anything more then that, and you may not even finnish, from my personal experience, stop b4 u get too full....it hurts....lol

I was able to eat a varity of things - fish, chicken, pork, cooked veggies. I had a wedding tonattend in CA and we were eating out for five days. I found scallops were a great option along with a variety of fish. Cottage cheese is also a good bet with a little fruit. There are tons of things you can order just be smart about it based on what you know you can tolerate.

I'm in my 7th week. I'm able to eat a wide variety of meats. I've eaten steak (2.5 oz at a time). I can eat tenderloin, chicken, hamburger patties, spaghetti, etc. You won't be able to eat much. I like to order off of the kids menu or share with my husband (although sometimes he doesn't like to share) lol I just stay away from breads and sugar, etc. Just remember small bites and chew, chew, chew! :)

I wasn't able to eat very much or very many kinds of foods at 7 weeks--it just depends on you and how your body is healing at that point. BUT a safe bet I have found in almost all restaurants is Soup. At a Mexican restaurant, I order the tortilla soup without the added tortillas. At an Italian restaurant, they will sometimes have a wonderful vegetable soup. At a Mediterranean place, lentil soup. At a Chinese place, hot and sour. Some of these have more or less Protein, but they are almost all easily tolerated early in the healing process, and you can order your own appetizer as an entree, and nobody bats an eye. My standard order is Water to drink (although I'm not going to drink it!--keeps the waitstaff from worrying), and then I always say, "I'd like a cup of the ___ soup as my entree, please," smile, and look over to the next person. It's quick and easy, and I don't end up taking 7/8 of my meal home and/or having to converse with the waitstaff about whether or not I enjoyed my meal, etc. etc.

I was thinking Chinese, and order the wonton soup(probly eat just broth and chicken pieces), or egg drop Soup. And maybe a bit of their chicken and broccoli. I'm just worried that my mom will try to get me to eat cake. lol. I was thinking about asking her to get me a fruit cup or fruit boquet instead....if I can eat it.

Hi Sarah!

Keep in mind everyone is different on what they can eat, what sits well with your tummy and your taste buds! Just a suggestion, but go ahead of time to where you normally would go and look at their menu... Most resturants offer Soups, which would be an option, and several resturants offer "light" or heart smart food choices... I went to Red Lobster at 6 weeks out and had grilled shrimp... nothing else, no yummy rolls, salad, potato, etc.. To be honest the thought of eating out was rather intimidating to me, I was worried about finding something I could eat now... not a problem... I can honestly say there has not been a resturant yet that I have not been able to find something at.... I would often times get a chefs salad and only eat the meat, eggs and cheese. Most nicer resturants have varieties of speciality salads, eat the meat/cheese & Protein first from any of the salads... Twice now I have been at resurants that what they had didnt sound as appealing to me, and I opted for Breakfast items, poached eggs, omelett.. it works! It is not as hard as I had it built up in my head to be... I just have to make smart choices... Now, at work my co-workers & I often eat out... fast food! Wendys- chilli,,,, coney island - chilli,,,, McDonalds -- grilled chicken salad,,,, Taco Bell - pinto's & cheese, no red sauce add meat!!! Subway is great too... there are food choices for us, we just have to make the right choice!

It partly depends upon how your doctor's program is structured - some are very slow to move patients off of liquids and into real foods while others (like my doc's) start with soft foods in the hospital and progress into more solid foods as tolerated. I was lucky (I guess!) that I had little problem tolerating new foods as introduced, so in that second month I was eating fairly normally, though in small amounts, particularly the solid Proteins like meats. But I was having restaurant meals when they happened and ate chicken parmesan, chicken marsala, soft tacos from Chipotle (less the tortilla), steaks, mexican restaurant carnitas; all are good for 2-4 meals with a doggy bag. Chinese (not my forte, though) would be good, particularly if it's the type where you share a lot of dishes, so you can have some Soup and sample small amounts of other things, too.

For birthday celebrations, it is well to stay away from most cakes and other sugary things - I tried a small piece of cake that my wife made for a club meeting and it didn't settle well with me, as seems to be the case for most sugary things. We all tend to have our differences with what works and what doesn't for us. However, I have found that some of the cake recipes on theworldaccordingtoeggface lady's site make a good treat that's WLS friendly - you might have one of them made for celebretory purposes:

I'm 3 weeks out and can eat fish and soft chicken with ease. I can easily eat 1 egg plus 1 egg white scrambled. By 7 weeks I assume I'll be able to eat fairly normally, just in small quantities.

I am exactly 7 weeks out today. I can eat just a little of anything, though I have not tried bread\pasta, yet. I pretty much stay close to hearty Soups though, because the vegetables and meat are soft. I get Protein, good carbs and liquids in one meal. What's not to love about that!

      Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
      What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
