Southern CA Kaiser Perm. Sleevers!

Recommended Posts

This may be a reacurring Topic, but Im new to the site and would love your feedback on the process you completed with Kaiser all the up to your surgery day (or receiving the date for some)

I just completed my options classes 8.16.11 and now I feel like a lost child wondering around at the park... Im currently waiting to be contacted for a consultation with the surgeon. I was told that all of my lab work had been completed and other test and now it's just a waiting game. Not to mention Im still working on my 10% weight lost that must be completed by my surgery date.

Pre Options: 260lbs

Post Options: 248

Must be 237lbs by my surgery date dry.gif

Im not sure where I am right now but Im almost sure I've lost 1-2lbs this week, I've been working out really hard and eating some what of a healthy diet.

How long did it take for your to get your surgery date after you completed options?

What facility were you referred to for surgery?

Are you currently attending the support groups?

Did options help you maintain yourself in the process?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for the feedback folks =)

Do you know who your surgeon is? I finished options January 24th, did not see the surgeon until March and was sleeved July 25th. Could be up to a 6 month wait depending what area you are from.

No Im still waiting for the referral to the surgical center. I just finished options last week so it could be approximately a few more weeks before i receive the referral. yes I was told that the total length including options would be approximately 7-8 months... So I guess I have 3 down and possibly 4 to go.

I'ts been so long I can hardly remember, but it was a grueling wait, waiting for the surgeon's office to call. I had my surgery at Harbor City, but I was offered West LA right away because there was no wait. Since I wanted a certain surgeon, I was willing to wait for him. I think it was almost 3 months between options and surgery. It will seem like an eternity but please be grateful that you have this opportunity to continue dieting before surgery because you will be so "ready" when it's finally time. Some people are self pay and rush right through to surgery and struggle. Kaiser patients are fortunate that Options makes you wait and be prepared for it. Good luck to you!

Thank you so much! and I really enjoyed the options classes, It is well worth it and will pay off in the end im sure. The three surgical center that they are offering my class is fountain vally west LA and a big possibility of San Diego. Hopefully I get to go with fountain valley since it closer to my home and seems to be a little more organized than west LA.

I'm a So. Cal Kaiser patient and I had my surgery through Pacific Bariatric in San Diego and the surgery part of things was a breeze. It was a bit far to drive, but Kaiser will reimburse you for travel, food, and hotel expenses for you and one companion. I remember feeling exactly the same way as you after I finished Options. I started a support group with some other gals in my Options class and we've kept it up for about 6 months now. It's been really helpful and nice to know that I'm not alone through this whole process. My process from the time I went to the first orientation until I had surgery was 17 months, 6 of those months were after completing the options classes.

Good luck to you!

Thank you for the information. I could imagine how dreadful it was going to SD for the procedure considering the time it took to get home and you may have needed to put over and walk to avoid blot clots. They've now lowered the time of options to 3 months.Im most grateful for that. I can't wait to actual get my surgery date and post updates.

Thanks Again :)

My time line is under my profile , I went with Dr.Suh in Corona and everything went extremely well. However the wait time and post care is nothing like Kaiser.....two hour apt wait times post op. I have 2 co workers who quit going to there follow ups with him but if you are a Kaiser patient you will be followed through Kaiser bariatric specialist after as well. But surgery wise was great.......Good luck on your journey , be patient and we were not held to the 10% weight loss , they just want you to change your eating habits. When I started Options I was 234 and was 252 by end of class, my co worker had gained 10 (stress I guess).........

We'll I just received a call yesterday for my medical clearance appointment which is Tuesday 8/30. Seems like they're are moving fast with the process. I've only been out of options a week and a half! Just thought I'd update everyone as to the status and how quickly the process is moving along. Thank you all for all of your feedback and kind wishes :)

I finished options August 2010 had to wait because of backup and met with surgeons in January. Due to work schedule operation was August 4 with Belzberg at Harbor facility. Real friendly nursing staff, quick at getting pain killers when needed.

Have a great procedure.

I got my date and I'm beyond excited!

There are other mandatory appointments that I have to go to but it's official I will be sleeved november 1st...

I'd say that was pretty fast considering I'm being sent to an outside facility that isn't wiithin my medical group.

I will keep everyone updated :) thanks for all of the support and answers to my questions!

How did you get a surgery date so soon????

I finished the Options program on 8.17.11, I am still waiting for an appointment from Fountain Valley. I registered, they sent me a video, I watched. And was told they would call me.

Are you going to the support meetings?

I completed options on Aug 16th :D

Yes it was really FAST!!! They called me two days after watching the video and then I had to attend a 'sleeve talk' with one of their surgeons.

Fountain valley moves really fast. you should be hearing from the scheduling coordinator possibly Angela pretty soon.

No Im not attending any support groups.. I may start after the surgery. But my girlfriend just had it and we're each others support group. The forum is our every day ritual lol.. And I keep in contact with some of my classmates.

Good Luck and let me know how things work out for you!

I finished my Options class at the Downey Kaiser on Aug 27th. I ended up calling them, when I hadn't heard anything. Long story short is, they got me my referral to Dr. Edward Mun at the South Bay Kaiser. I was excited to find out that Dr. Mun is one of the best surgeons in the world. Anyway, I had my appt with him and I'll be having surgery Oct 25th!!

Good luck to you!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
