New bander needs advice

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I'm looking to see how everyone else's care is comparing with mine. I got banded in Canon City by a doctor named Tim Brown, he has been around for about four years doing these bands. I was banded on June 07, 2006 in Canon City Colorado and live in Pueblo. I got my first fill on July 10th or so. Except for the first few days I barely felt any different as far as not being able to eat. Seems like yesterday that was all I did!:hungry:

Does anyone have any advice as to what their experience was? I need all the help I can get in this experience for I know of no one else who has had this done.

Hey Carol, Welcome!!!! I haven't been banded yet, but wanted to tell you that you are from my home town. My Husband and I also opened the McDonald's in Canon City, Co and lived up there for about 3 years. Both my husband and I graduated from South High School and lived there until 1998 when we moved down here to Dallas. Anyway WELCOME! You will be getting some GREAT advice from these folks.

Thanks for that information. Being overweight I think I know a little about dieting and overeating. I am finding out that the banding procedures are very different and that is why hearing other people tell their experience is so interesting to me.

If you are having trouble with restriction it could be that you need another fill. My doctor waits 2 weeks before he will fill again. Don't be shy. Call your doctor and find out. Good luck.

shortly after i received my first fill, i realized that i was just as hungry. i went back for my second fill a month later, and low and behold, my first fill just vanished! i would for sure look at another fill.

I would ask for another fill. I got my first one on Wednesday and I'm hungry. I'm still on liquids so I'll wait until I get to solid food to make sure I have no restriction. If not, I'll be calling for a fill. I think its good to wait a few weeks to make sure you really don't have restriction.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
