Congrats on your surgery! I am sorry you are in pain. I didnt have a lot of pain after surgery. I was hospitalized for two days and on morphine pump for surgery day and the next. They took it out the second day and sent me home with lortab liquid and phenergan. I never took it. I was only sore, no real pain that required meds. It does get a lot easier to get up and down in the days to come.. did your dr give you pain meds? Tylenol easy tabs work well also.

I am a little over three weeks out, and my left side still hurts some at night when I turn to my left. That's the side that takes all the punishment. Take the meds you need and rest as much as you can. I never had pain radiating to my back. Are you taking GasX? Helps a lot.

I started gas ex last night. It hurts getting up and down still! The dr said she had to cut my abdominal muscle. They have me on a muscle relaxer and percaset ( cant spell) my husband says its a strong pain killer. My incision sites dont hurt at all, its just the whole left side when I move. Whenever i get up to pee i walk around. I hope it heals soon so I can start to enjoy my new life! Thanks for the replies!

Hi,

I had my surgery on 8/8/11 and I still have pain on my left side. I guess we all heal at different rates. I hope you feel better soon.

I haven't felt much pain at all. Are your incisions lower or higher on your belly? Mine are way up high. I wonder if that means they didn't have to cut through muscle?

the pain was from the lower left side, right? Mine is hurting so bad, especially if i sit for a while then try to stand or sit. My incision sites dont hurt at all! Just where they cut the muscle. It even hurts around my side to my left side back. I really hope it gets beeter soon!! Thanks for your reply!

Yes, it felt like someone was pulling on my insides. Also, I would have pain if I sat for awhile or walked to much. 2 weeks ago my family and i went on vacation to San Fransico. I walked so much and was very sore in the evening but it was the best thing i could have done. I feel back to my energized self minus the over eating.lol It gets so much better...I fell 100% better.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
