Bariatric Surgery Do's And Don'ts

Recommended Posts

Hi, I just wanted to say that I think that this list is great and even though I'm not getting the sleeve I feel that it still applies to what I will be facing. I hope you don't mind but I'm going to share this on the band site and I think it should be shared on other sites as well.

Hi,

Please feel free to share it. I am happy that you liked it. I have shared it on more than one site.

Hugs,

Suzanne

I don't mind at all! I support all methods of Weight Loss or weight loss surgery. I have friends from all over the board on my Facebook. :) I have not copied and pasted this list to that however, but I should. :)

Adding a few new entries:

DON'T expect the scale to post a loss every single day. As a matter of fact, don't expect it to move that much even weekly! Just keep doing all the right things and the scale will move in the right direction when it needs to.

DO expect to see fluctuations on the scale, both down AND up. DON'T lose your head over it either. This isn't a miracle cure and the weight isn't going to magically disappear in a few weeks. You have to keep pushing with healthy eating, some type of workout and getting plenty of Fluid.

DON'T let the scale define your journey when there are so many pieces to that puzzle!!!

Nicely done!! Excellent post! I would also like to add one of my favorite sayings...

DO remember that the sleeve is stomach surgery and not brain surgery. If you are an emotional eater, or a compulsive overeater, or if you have any sort of serious eating disorder you cannot expect the sleeve to automatically fix that. It's extremely important to address the mental and emotional reasons that you eat and not just rely on the restriction of the sleeve to keep your eating under control.

Welcome! You're probably better off starting a new thread completely rather than posting in this one. You probably won't have a lot of people checking here. Go to either the post-op or pre-op surgery thread and hit the new post button. Good luck and I hope you get the information you're looking for. You certainly have good motivation in your sons!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
