When could you drink CAFFEINE?

Recommended Posts

I started with black tea right away, Decaf for the first month, than moved on to regular coffee.

Just curious as to when you were able to start drinking caffeine?

My program is a bit whacky on this one. I've recieved no less than 4 different answers. The most generous was 90 days out. The tightest answer was never.

I'm 4 months out and I get a coffee about once a week. 1/2 caf 1/2 Decaf. I find I tolerate that level in a large coffee. If I just get a small, I get full caff.

What I have noticed is that even the decaf coffee ( I drink it black ) increases my acid reflux. It's one of those things I drank by the gallon pre-surgery. At this point I really don't miss it much but it's nice to be able to occasionally have a cup but that's good enough.

My doc recommends no caffeine ever, but grudgingly admits most people can have it about 6 months out with no tolerance issues. I have been trying to do Decaf with my Protein Shakes and my reflux is nightmarish. I'm going to quit the decaf for now altogether and go a different route with my Protein. :( I make decaf sweet tea at home with splenda so hopefully that will sit well with my sleeve.

My doctor allowed it 4 weeks out but I figured since I went that long without it, why go back??? Plus, caffienated drinks DO NOT count toward your daily Fluid intake.

Good Luck on Your Journey!

I have decided not to go back to coffee. I think the Creamer was one of the factors in me gaining weight in the first place, and I don't want to do that again. I thought about buying Decaf, so I could have some. I then decided not to bother. Even before the surgery, too much coffee would mess up my belly. I don't want to risk it now.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
