Amazing how much can change in three days!

Recommended Posts

After much juggling and such by my doctor's office (who must employee miracle workers!), I am officially having my surgery tomorrow morning! I am petrified and excited and nervous and anxious all rolled up in to one. There's a different route that I had to take, though. I have to have the gastric bypass because my insurance has decided they won't pay for a sleeve. I admit I was bummed and off kilter for a little bit. I'm going to go ahead with the bypass because that was my first decision before I discovered the sleeve option. I have an amazing doctor that I adore and I just feel okay with it all. I suppose I'll have to leave this board now (after I check and make sure the August sleevers are good!) since I don't qualify. You all are in my thoughts and prayers and I am so proud of all of us who have taken control of our lives. We are rock stars!!!!

Aww sorry to hear you won't be a sleever but I completely get it - if I had been denied I would have went for bypass too. Make sure you let us know how everything goes and that you are doing good - you are an honorary sleever!

Yeah, I don't think you exactly need to leave the board, but if you do hang around you probably want to mention you're a RnY so people can know how to gauge what you say. There are significant similarities and differences. For instance, the nutritional needs tend to be the same. The mechanism for weight loss is very different.

My wife got a RnY six years ago. It's a tougher recovery route if you ask me, but it's faster weight loss. I would have had a RnY if my insurer had not begun to approve the sleeve at the end of 2010.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
