time off from Work - Hom much Time

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

I am new to this forum. I will have my surgery on 9/7/2011 - I am super excited but nervous at the same time. I have requested time off from work. But My HR department asked me how many days i think I will be out on sick leave. I told them that I dependint on the Doctor's orders, probably it will be between 7 to10 days out. I was planning to go back to work on 9/26. Is this enough time?? i want to make sure I give them the reasonable time, but also, I want to make sure I feel well enough to work.

7 to 10 days may be enough for you. Everyone responds to the surgery, anest. differently and it depends on the type of job you have--active vs. sedentary. I have taken 4 weeks (partly because I needed to use up some leave) but could have returned at 10 days as I wasn't in much discomfort. The only issue I would have had would have been eating, which I would have been on the pureed stage at that point.

If you plan really well and are not in any pain or having discomfort, you should be fine returning to work by 9/26.

Good luck!

Thanks! I think it will be fine. I am little concerned because I have kiddos at home. but I will try to rest as much as I can.

My doctor told me to plan on 4 to 6 weeks at home to get used to my new lifestyle. I'm at four weeks today with my four week follow up appointment on Friday. At that time we will determine if I need any additional time off. Physically, I felt that I could hvae gone back to work a week or two after surgery, but my surgeon thought it was too soon.

I had my surgery Tuesday 8/9/2011 and I went back to work on Monday 8/15/2011. I work as a nurse at a busy clinic and I have felt just fine! Actually getting up and doing things helps me feel better. :-)

I'm like Nurselisa - I had surgery 8/10 and my first day working (from home) was 8/15. I got so restless and stir-crazy at home, I went back to the office yesterday and everything went great. It is a little harder to follow my 'schedule' so I printed it out and kept it close to my PC at work so I could make sure I was on track.

Everyone is different, but I would take as much time as you can, especially with kids AND a job. You generally can go back to work sooner if you feel up to it. I'm sure the company would appreciate that, but I would reserve as much as you can just in case you have a rocky first two or three weeks. This is fairly serious surgery, and I think that most people rush it. Good luck.

I took 4 weeks off. My doctor said that having this surgery is like hitting "the control, alt, delete" button on my body. I am amazed about how many people go back so quickly. I could have gone back at 3 weeks, but I'm glad I was on regular foods by the time I went back. It takes so much effort to remember to track your fluids, there is NO WAY I could have concentrated on work. Plus I also had to get 2 kids up and off to school. Take as much time as you can, you can ALWAYS go back earlier. Good Luc,

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
