Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

I had surgery dec 2012, i gained almost 40 pounds back from not eating right and not excercising. The good thing is though, its a tool, if you use your tool, you can lose. I am happy to say that i have lost that weight and continuing on a downward spiral...thank goodness.

I was sleeved on August 3rd and went home on August 5th. I was so depressed because I looked so bloated in the mirrors at the hospital. My IV had slipped, and instead of pumping fluids into my veins, Fluid was being pumped into my tissues. My left arm was so swollen. I had some other issues, as well (having an allergic reaction to the hydrocodone & acetaminophen that they had originally prescribed for pain). When I came home from the hospital, I weighed my pre-surgery weight, which was 232 before I went on my 10-day liquid diet.

It's now been a week and one day since surgery and I have dropped all of the Water weight and have been losing. Currently at 219.

You can look at my other post on here. Was sleeved 5 years ago. Was 300, lowest I got was 175. In Feb 2016 was at 205 & having nightmares about gaining my weight back.

In Feb my wife had a health scare & we were asked to watch Forks over Knives. Since that day we have been eating 100% healthy food. My wife's health problems went away & she was taken off all her meds except one. I am down to 160 & feeling great.

Hi guys. Id been compaining abt wt gain and lack of stamina etc since i got back from wales in 2014. Thiss week my card did an ECHO and found that my diastolic something ornother doesnt fully contract on that cycle so he rxd spironolactone and i have lost 6 lbs in 4 days. I was and am on lasix but this new med is very strange. It makes me nauseated and does make me feel like im on speed. I love not having to force myself to do something. I love not curtailing my activities because the thpught of getting in smd out of the car is too much. But i am terrified about what this means and how i am going to shift into yet another phase, here. So i did not gain because i missed the accolades. I dont know what made me so hungry. I dont know why the addition of this drug at a small dosage is so potent. Anyone else have this experience? I have to lose about 4 to get back to under 200 again.

When I was prescribed Spironolactone for PCOS-related acne by a dermatologist when I was 20 he told me that it would likely cause a weight loss, and it did. At first. I was elated with the medicine because I lost about 10 pounds on it, saw my pores shrink and my acne vanish, and it caused my periods to stop for a few months (which at the time was something that I saw as a blessing rather than a worry). The honeymoon period ended but I hadn't realized it because the effects of the medicine were really insidious. Over time it contributed to substantial weight gain, sleep disruptions, fatigue, and a plethora of other problems. I started reading more reviews of the medicine on various boards and discovered that many other women had similar experiences, with positive effects at first followed by gradual negative ones. My endocrinologist had me wean off it last year prior to surgery. She said many women, especially those with endocrine issues, have experienced weight gain, depression, and other problems, and that it shouldn't be taken long-term but frequently is. My blood pressure has actually been much better since going off of it, and my skin actually looks much more youthful and clear without the drying effects of the medicine. I sleep better, am more energetic, and have definitely had an easier time losing weight.

I would talk with your doctor about your symptoms and discuss whether it's a medicine you absolutely need to take.

I told my husband we should watch that. He is diabetic and having a hard time getting his sugar under control.

I spoke to my bariatric surgeon recently and he said ALL Bariatric surgery fails in two years as the stomach stretches. He offered me the Sleeve or Bypass even though I'm 69 (I weigh 230) but its a lot of money for a failure in two years and it's put me right off surgery.

I would run, not walk, far away from that surgeon. In my experience (3 yrs post-op) he is absolutely incorrect in his assessment that ALL bariatric surgeries fail within 2 years. However, he may be speaking the truth regarding his patients. If that's the case, why would you want him doing your surgery. I would not want someone with a 100% failure rate (I wonder what his idea of failure is) touching me with a 10-foot pole.Do some research and find a bariatric surgeon with a high success rate and follow the pre-op and post-op rules. You are the captain of your ship--no one else. If you go into this thinking you will inevitably fail, you will.

I had surgery July 26, 2013. I started at 269 and met my goal of 135 on May 19, 2014. I have been maintaining between 135-140 for 2 years. My sleeve still works if I put the work into it. It is not a magic wand, just a tool.

Good luck to you,

Lorie

I'm 7 years out and my sleeve works just fine. I've not gained my weight back but I make careful choices. If you expect the sleeve to do all the work ( and it might, the first year) you will gain weight back. The sleeve restricts portions. It does not stop us from putting candy, cake, pie, ice cream, cake, french fries, chips, etc into out mouths.

thats good to hear that someone is not struggling. there is a nurse at a different providors office who also has good success w

ith her lap band after many years. imho people who dix not have tttat much to lose have a longersuccessful time remaining at. goal. i also think older people have qucker reversals. its not a scientifi c opinion...just my idle guess.

WTF?

The SURGERY doesn't fail. We fail the surgery.

FYI I'm over 2 year out and below my goal weight. I eat healthy and clean 95% of the time and exercise regularly. Where's the failure?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
