Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm also pretty sure that the maintenance "diet" (calories, Proteins, carbs, etc.) that work for Person X may not work equally well for Person Y.

So serious experimentation really is required to maintain well.

"Get WLS surgery and never have a weight problem again" is not the way it goes for almost anyone. I think you just have to keep figuring out what works for you -- food wise and behavior wise.

I'm sorry you think therapy couldn't help you or that it rings "hollow" to you. Just for the record (and the benefit of others reading this), my therapist has been quite helpful to me during the last 13-14 months. I started seeing him a few months before my own WLS (in August 2014).

I'll also say in response to your inferred question ("If eating less is the solution, why did we have the surgery?") that WLS gave me the opportunity to lose weight quickly and get back my ability to move my body a LOT more than I could pre-op. That extra movement alone adds hundreds of calories to my daily maintenance diet and gives me a much better fighting chance to maintain my weight than I could pre-op.

At the end of the day, no matter how we do it, weight loss and weight maintenance are not easy-peasy.

We know its not easy peasy. My question was to laurak when she said "every diet works".

And I dont think therapy doesn't work. In fact, my life is proof that IT IS working. I'm responding to an angry tone o sense in your message. Did i misread it?

Boy I sure didn't intend to start a shitstorm, sorry ladies and gents. And I never accused anyone of eating crap. I simply asked a question. Are people eating bad to gain back lots of weight? Well looking at my friends who have gained back all their weight, yes they have reverted back to the standard American poor diet. I was lucky in that I didn't have to go to therapy. But I do have an type A personality and am anal about food and exercise. And i've been a heavy exerciser for 27 years. I just needed the restriction in my case. I know it's not the same for all. And my vegan diet allows for more food volume which helps even more. I only wanted to offer a possible eating alternative that has helped me.

For me, the sleeve has helped ME to stay on my diet of choice and maintain my loses. I never said it was easy but it is possible. I also think some people need malabsorption for metabolic issues.

And I'm on vacation right now and my whole family is sitting around me eating fattening tacos for Breakfast. Hell yes I want them but I'm having a bowl of oatmeal instead. That's my reality.

I am 3.5 years out and yes, I have gained about 15 lbs in the last year.....eating empty calories and sugar. I work hard to get back on track but fail 90 percent of the time. Did good yesturday and hubby brought home some mexican pastries which I love. My bad, i couldn't leave them alone. I'm having a lot of emotional turmoil going on in my house and reckonize that I am an emotional eater......So this is hard work. Just doing Protein Shakes and Protein Bars doesn't cut it any more. I can eat a lot more now......I'm going to pull my hair out.........urggggg

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
