Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

Cindi...internist did not seem concerned! He said if you throw out the hi and low u r fairly regular. But it is a gain of 5 to 6 lbs if u look at it that way and it concerns me. The cardio, whom i havent seen yet, said we will discuss it. So i continue to struggle.

I am 2 years post op. I lost 85 lbs in the first 8 months and maintained that for another 3. Then I started to regain slowly at first and now I'm up 33 lbs. I am very disappointed in myself & feeling like a failure once again. I keep trying to start over each day, but haven't been successful obviously. I am so scared that I can't stop this regain. No only do I need to stop, now I need to lose the same weight yet again

I'm beyond frustrated & feel very alone.

Don't feel alone. I haven't even made it to my goal yet, and I've gained 20 pounds back. My little granddaughter had 3 heart surgeries in two weeks in January. My coping mechanism used to be eating, and I went right back to a diet of Cookies and Little Debbie's . Just this week I'm starting to exercise again, drinking Water, water, water! I still have to go hour by hour to keep myself from eating...I don't know what! We're doing a major clean out of the cupboards, freezers and any other spots I might have sugar stashed! I'm an addict. A SUGAR ADDICT!!! I knew it before I had the surgery, and I was scared something like this would happen. Like you, I'm disappointed in myself, but I won't give up. Are you exercising? That seems to help some. I already gave away all of my clothes and I won't go buy more larger clothes. Seasons are changing and I want to buy smaller new clothes, not bigger ones. The scales is just starting to go down, and I have about 70 pounds to lose again instead of the 49 it was in December. We can do this. We really can. Keep me posted on how you're doing, okay?

Next month it will be 7 years for me. I can tell you it never gets easier.

I love all the signatures where people put ________lbs gone forever!

the first year it was easy because 3 bites of food and I was so stuffed I didn't want anything for hours and hours.

I'm amazed I am only fighting to take 10 off that I gained. It could easily be 25 if I didn't watch every single bite I take.

Debsta and Jesusgirl ,

I feel your dread daily. i am not recommendin a fall or fracture to help but that is exactly what happened last week. I tripped and fell over a thin wire on my landline phone and cracked my rt patella. I was told i needed surgery and will be in a cast 6 weeks. My living circumstances are bleak and lonely and i truly feared that this was "the end". You'd think i would eat everything in sight. I did not. I lost 8 lbs instead. Im back at 200. I think because being immobile made me fear i would run out of food completely. Yesterday the surgeon said the fracture had not worsened and we will try just a brace for 6 to 8 weeks. Will i continue losing? I don't know. But it does seem like personal trauma causes change.

It does!

My husband was killed in an accident ( almost 30 years ago) and I lost 35 lbs. I was eating normally exactly the way I always had. It was just stress. Every day I would get on the scale and it was down at least 3 lbs, sometimes 5!

Oregondaisy,we shouldn't need trauma to lose weight. Almost feels immoral. Usually stress makes me want to grab at comfort foods. We need to learn to identify types of and manage different stressors. Maybe we could learn to put it to use in our favor? Im sure its been done or suggested. ...anyone have data??

(I am sorry for your loss!)

This phenomenon -- weight loss due to life's stresses -- contributes to the idea that older WLS folks shouldn't try to become as lean as they once yearned to be when they were younger.

Throw in the physical and emotional stresses of common life changes for most seniors -- retirement, moving to new surroundings (and sometimes new cities), caring for ill loved ones, deaths of our parents, spouses, other family members and friends, -- and you can see why a few extra pounds for seniors isn't a terrible thing.

Note that "a few extra pounds" isn't 100 extra pounds. ;)

For all of you that have regained, did you ever seek psychiatric help? You are all admitted addicts and/or turned to old eating habits as soon as something bad happened in you life. We got help from a bariatric surgeon, but what we really need is help with our heads. What would you say to a meth addict who had the choice to get help and regain control of their life but instead chose to just stay in their room and keep using? Turning to bad eating habits is no different than giving in to a crack habit.

I actually never sought counseling before or after WLS because I never had issues with the process. In fact, I found it quite easy to lose and maintain when everything was rose colored and happy. But when my best friend committed suicide last year, I knew I couldn't cope on my own. I was depressed, angry, sad, confused, and ready to put a bullet into my head as well. But since I couldn't do that to my parents, I had to figure out another option. I REFUSED to turn to my old standbys of food and alcohol....but that's all I knew how to do. After all, I spent 18 months drunk and gaining weight after my brother died. I was really good at it.

With no relief in sight, I finally sought the help of a grief counsellor. I'm not saying it was a magical fix, I still struggle and I barely function through my fog of grief some days. But I'm still here and I am learning new coping mechanisms. We don't even talk about weight related issues because that's not the problem. The grief is the problem.

And for most people who have WLS, eating isn't really the problem, either, life's stressors are the problem. You just don't know any other way to cope besides turning to food. But in the end WLS is a waste of time and money if you don't address the REAL reasons behind why you abuse food. You've GOT to learn how to deal with life without using food to cushion the blows.

If time or money are constraints to getting help, there are alternatives. OA is free. Larger cities, hospitals, even churches have free support groups. It doesn't have to be bariatric specific support. It isn't about what to eat and what not to eat......You already know all that. It's about dealing with an addiction and learning new life skills. Even something as simple as meditation or yoga can be helpful.

Smart Recovery is a very good addiction recovery program and an alternative to the better known 12 step programs like AA and OA. Its based more in CBT and treats addiction like a behavior that you have the ability to change rather than treating you like a victim of a disease. They have online forums and meetings, in person meetings, and the handbook to get started on your own is just $8.00. I've found it very empowering and a nice supplement to my counseling.

There is no shame in seeking help. Life is hard and sometimes we need a stronger hand than our own to drag us through the worst parts.

(Sorry for the long rant)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
