hello from Texas!!!!

Recommended Posts

ok--so after lurking here for about 6 months--time to introduce myself...

it took me about a year to convince my hubby that this surgery is safe...finally accomplished that!!!

found a surgeon--dr barker in dallas--started the 6 month program(three months ago)--have had quite a few of the pre op test done too--NOW have found out my insurance is not going to cover it--SO...

talked to christi--i think I will be going to Mexico towards the end of September for Dr Kelly--I am VERY excited and ready to get on with this, just a little nervous...I sure wish I had my camera out when i told hubby i was going to mexico...:D he tells me he is going to go with me , so he can bring my body back... I don't know what I am gonna do with that man!!!!

I am a little nervous, but time to get on with it!!

I am 43 years old, live in Texas, I have three grown kids--two girls, ages 26 and 22 and a son age 25--I love my yorkie!!! I figure this is a good time since I am retired, and have no one to be responsible to except my hubby and our business. My youngest daughter is getting married and graduating college next May so I am hoping to be WAY down by then!!!!

I live in Dallas and will be sleeved in Sept by Dr. Davidson at Forest Park. My insurance wouldn't cover either. Best of luck!

I live near Dallas and am planning on getting sleeved by Dr. Daryl Stewart. He's located in Denton. I'm self pay also. Figure I can spend $$ now for surgery, or spend it later on healthcare and medicines. At 62, things aren't going to get better if I don't get this done.

I was wondering if any one had heard any news about Blue Cross announcing they are now going to cover the sleeve. I have a BMI of 40 and was told a week ago they wouldnt cover. My friend went to a seminal today and a doctor told everyone they are now approving. Im in MD.

I have Anthem BC/BS in Indiana and they covered the sleeve . . . every plan is a little different, though. Remember that even every BCBS plan is different in every state, BC/BS is like a "franchise" for lack of a better term and while there are some BC/BS administration guidelines, I believe each state can dictate the particulars of their plans.

Snowden,

I live here in Texas and both me and my wife are having the surgery. Both my wife and I have Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield. We went in for our first Doctor appointment 2 weeks ago and found out that our plan covers 100% of the procedure. The only thing we will have to pay out of pocket for is, our doctor requires us go through a training class which is $250.00 per person and then we will have to pay $250.00 per person for the stay in the hospital. Blue Cross Blue shield recently changed their guidelines. We found out that we also do not have to participate in the 6 month, doctor supervised diet that was once required. We will both be having our surgeries at the end of September and beginning of October.

Thats good news. I'm guessing that they are changing their policy in all states. I had given up on the sleeve and was recently given a surgery date for the lap band on the 31st. I'm gonna call BC and my doctor first thing Mon to see what the scoop is. Good luck in ur journey and thanks for your post.

i have bcbs of illinois--BUT they are really only administrators for our insurance--which is actually self insurance by my hubbies work--they cover the lap band but i refuse to get that!!! so you just have to check around with what ever insurance you have

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
