help! pre op to post op hunger and nerves!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys!

My surgery is wednesday and I am coming to a close on day 2 of liquids. I am doing ok because of the Protein shakes, but, I am hungry and so wanting to eat! tomorrow is alittle different as its only Clear Liquids, which is kinda a problem cause everything has red dye in it and i cant have it, but i plan on alot of broth that is loaded with sodium! I am worried i am going to STARVE tomorrow and then my surgery is wednesday, I feel like i dont know when the next time im gonna eat is! Will i be hungry after surgery? Please tell me what its like! Its hard going from eating big satisfying portions to nothing!!!! My idiot husband was watching the food network earlier and I couldnt believe how insensitive! I know he is clueless, but, still! I feel like backing out cause I am scared of giving up food. I keep telling myself i will be able to eat eventually, but, going into the unknown scares me. I hear different stories and some are really scary and I pray that I have a smooth sleeve experience.

Then I read my hospital papers and they were talking about the cold sterile surgery room and I started to get really nervous! I want this so bad, but, I am having second thoughts! It all happened so quick and im scared! Did anyone else go through this?

I had my surgery last Weds and did a clear liquid diet most of the day before. I was really hungry that night before and was a little mopey, but as soon as I got out of surgery and was alert, I definitely did NOT feel hungry. food will be the last thing on your mind during your hospital stay and likely the few days after you get home.

I won't lie, it's been tough to stick to the full liquids diet (dang but I want to chew something!) but I know there is light at the end of the tunnel. When I have gotten frustrated I have gone for a walk, picked up a book or jumped on the laptop.

Good luck to you, you'll do great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
