Tara B 0 Posted August 15, 2011 I had surgery 3 weeks ago... I've done wonderful and have no complaints. My incisions seem to be healing great BUT I have noticed that I have the internal stitches poking though on one of my incisions. It doesn't hurt its not infected... but I'm not sure what to do at this point. I know they are dissolvable, so should I just wait it out? Hoping someone went through something similar or has some insight as to what I should do... Thanks!
Chicadee 10 Posted August 15, 2011 I was just told to clip it close to the skin I had one poke out on two of my incisions.
Nancy Rivers 24 Posted August 15, 2011 Just wait it out - nothing to be concerned about. All 5 of my incisions have the thread poking out on at least one side - most are both sides. I asked the PA about it and she said it was normal for me. Some people's bodies apparently do not dissolve the thread, and instead expel it (push it out) of the body instead. Gaylebco 11 Posted August 15, 2011 My NP just took a suture kit and took out the ones sticking out.
exoticheart 5 Posted August 15, 2011 It can take up to 2 months sometimes to dissolve, just leave them be and they will fall off..I had 2 that did that to me and my co-worker had 3 that we had to wait it out...........just a pain but is normal. AutumnLily 77 Posted August 15, 2011 I had one and I kind of pulled it and then cut it close to the skin. I wanted the skin to heal so that there was not entry point for infections to get in.
Heatherr 149 Posted August 15, 2011 I have one too, but it doesnt stick out enough to cut it and now the scar tissue from my wound has grown over it. The problem with that is that now the scar is all puckered. I hope it goes down. Any experience?
HDubSleevery 25 Posted August 15, 2011 I think this is commonly referred to as spitting stitches. I had it happen in previous surgeries. They will work themselves out.
ouroborous 519 Posted August 16, 2011 It's extremely common and nothing to worry about. They are a little annoying because they're prickly and get caught on stuff. Talk to your doc about it, but usually what they do is just pull it out with a forceps. If there's a loop left they may have to snip that (they did for me). Marie from Michigan 11 Posted August 16, 2011 I only had one stitch poke through the largest incision. I noticed it about week three and it broke off about week five. I still have a little scar where it was.

As a registered nurse, I would advise you to just leave it be. It'll take care of itself. but that is just my opinion, most folks do what they want anyhow. . . good luck! sugarmamma7 2 Posted August 16, 2011 I had the same problem and my doctor just snipped it off in the office.
