Failing in the protein department

Recommended Posts

So I feel much better today and I'm done whining about the pain from surgery. Wow. It was something. I even slept in my bed last night for a couple of hours. So I think I'm doing pretty good in the recovery department. My problem is, I'm not getting in much Protein daily. I've been getting 25-30 grams a day and that's all. I can't eat or drink very much so I don't know how I'm supposed to get all this down. My normal routine is applesauce in the morning with my PPI mixed in, then a few hours later I eat 1/2 of a greek yogurt, then finish the yogurt at lunchtime. In the afternoon I try to drink a Protein Drink but can only get down about 1/2 of it. For dinner I've had pureed chicken and Tomato Soup.

For those of you recently sleeved, how much Protein are you getting in each day?

For those of you who are veterans.... do you remember how long it took you to get your recommended protein?

Thanks for listening.

I don't have a Protein requirement yet, we are supposed to trial them and if it doesn't sit well back off. Having said that, I have gotten 6 grams the first day home, 31,38, 36 and so far today I have 14 in. Milk seems to be bothering me so I am getting some almond milk or soy milk today to try. I am getting some in via Greek yogurt and Jello besides the shake - which yesterday I did a half shake and will probably do the same today. Hydration is my goal until my first post op visit at 2 weeks. Hope that helps. Glad you are feeling better!!

My Dr. says not to worry about Protein until stage II. Main priority should be hydration, which should come in the form of the G2 and other Clear Liquids. Each day it seems that I am able to take in more liquid. I think you need more time to heal before putting in the protein. B)

I don't know what kind of Protein you're using, but you may want to try Syntrax Nectar's. Based on how you like it to taste, it can be mixed with as little as 2oz of Water (I use 6oz) and you get either 23 or 25 grams of protein (I can't remember which and I'm too lazy to go look :D). I bought a sample pack from bariatric pantry for less than $14 and got 10 different flavors. So far I like the Twisted cherry and Roadside Lemonade. I didn't care for the fuzzy navel one, and I was really looking forward to it since that was one of my favorite mixed drinks in my younger days.

I started having an easier time getting liquids in on day 5. I set my timer and drank 2 ounces every 15 minutes- and I included Protein Drinks in my beverages. With a chocolate/decaf drink containing 30 grams in the morning, a strawberry/fruity on in the afternoon and an Unjury chicken Soup in the late afternoon I was getting 80 grams a day bu day 7. The ONLY way I could get all my fluids in (and the fluids in Protein drinks count) is with the timer.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
