Can liquid stretch your sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Hi! Does anyone know if drinking liquid can stretch your sleeve? I've been downing a lot of liquid lately, trying to keep up with my needed intake. My husband asked me if I happened to drink it too fast and too often, would it stretch my stomach. Good grief, I don't know! That just gave me something else to worry about. Just so you know, I'm not talking about carbonated drinks. I'm talking about Water, tea, skim milk...etc.

liquids cannot...they just flow like Water through a pipe. If you drink too fast, liquids will come up.

yes, like Foxbins said liquids cannot stretch out your pouch... liquids run through it, your fine and congrats on keeping the Fluid flowing that is so valuable in many ways, ,, you keep your hydration up, you feel fuller, it helps your skin & body.... You are doing awesome by pushing them fluids!!!

Well, liquids probably won't, as long as they're closer to "clear" liquids. Some of the more "full" liquids MIGHT, but you'd really have to be overdoing it... almost TRYING to sabotage yourself.

Bottom line is that before you got to the point where they'd damage you, you'd be in significant discomfort or pain. So if you stop before that point, you should be fine.

Some argue that carbonated beverages can stretch your sleeve, but as far as I know about the physics of gases and liquids, that's just really unlikely. Gases (the CO2 from carbonation) are compressible (so the stomach can "squish" them into a smaller space), and just like liquids, it's far more likely that the stomach will squirt them out one of its sphincters before stretching the tough upper stomach tissue. In short, you'll burp or fart before you get to the point of stretching.

It's probably still good to avoid carbonated beverages because they tend to be empty calories and very acidic, but I doubt they'd stretch your stomach.

Just remember what you saw on the screen when you did your leak test. You took a drink of that nastiness and down it went. Into the tummy, then the tummy squeezes here and there to push it along and out it goes into the intestines. Each swallow seemed to take less than a minute for the whole process. It can't stretch the tummy if it isn't there long enough to make a difference.

I didn't look at the screen and I wish I had. So, today I went and got a copy of my swallow test from the radiologist. I was also worried about stretching with liquids and possibly hurting the staple line. I am three weeks post op, H20, Protein Shakes and yogurt are going down without any problems. Oh, the stress or worrying about every little thing! I am looking forward to not thinking each moment about the fact that I have been sleeved and just going about my business. I hope that day will come before too long. Thank you for asking this question, it was helpful.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
