Can you eat sushi?

Recommended Posts

I love Sushi and I miss Sushi because with my band I cannot eat rice and I have tried MULTIPLE times to ask them to cut into thinner rolls, eliminate the seaweed etc and I still want to throw it up because it gets stuck- Has anyone had any issues with eating Sushi with the sleeve?

I just went out for sushi last week with my husband. I was only able to eat 1 and a half pieces from the roll that I ordered, but it didn't get stuck or make me feel bad or anything. I just chew chew chewed until i felt safe to go ahead and swallow and it was fine. I ate another piece that night, picked apart another two pieces the next morning and threw the rest out. I had surgery 2 months ago tomorrow.

I have been ordering sushi with a cucumber wrap instead of rice for months, even before WLS. It just tastes better to me, and is sooo healthy. Try it.

I would think the sashimi would be okay, but watch out for the rice. I hear it can be very filling.

Try sashimi (just the sliced meat). The rice is usually the culprit, especially with the band. Sushi rice is extraordinaly sticky and clumpy. If nori is a challenge for you, most places will wrap with bean paper/soy wraps instead. It pretty much dissolves without much chewing.

I'm not sleeved yet, but if I can't eat sashimi afterward, I'm going to be in trouble. :)

I concur with Tera, the cucumber wrapped sushi is awesome, but it's a little pricey. I have been eating sushi with rice for about a month and a half with no issues. I just have to eat it slow, or it causes discomfort when going down. I alternate between salmon alvacado roll and smoked salmon sashimi. I eat this once or twice a week. Love it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
