Nexium seems to be what most surgeons prescribe (including mine). A pill crusher for it would be good as you have to chew it and it gets stuck in your teeth. It's totally gross tasting and the only way to get it out is to brush your teeth.

Crystal Light is handy to have as is broth.< /span>

I had to change my dressings every day after I showered, so you'll need gauze and micro pore - unless you have one of those rare surgeons who insists on no showers for a week! tongue.gif

For me it was Clear Liquids for the first week and you should be well enough to go to the shops by the end of that time.

I had to have anti-coagulant injections for a month after surgery, but not all surgeons do that and it could've been because I had several flights in the few weeks immediately post op.

All the best.

Hi, I am a mom of twins also! This is my first time posting anything on this site, but I have visited a few times, I love it too. I have my appointment with my surgeon on Monday and am freaking out a little. I keep second guessing this decision. What are some questions that I should ask the surgeon? Any advice on the cold feet?

Thanks

Thanks

I'd ask what post op meds you're going to need. You may be able to get them cheaper through your PCP.

I bought a bunch of sobe lifewater and Vitamin Water, zero calorie, I am not a big plain Water drinker. Lots of SF Popsicles, you can have Jello too but I didn't bother with it. Drank a lot of Isopure the first week although I can't stand the taste save for the pineapple orange banana. chicken broth was great, nice to have something warm going down. I was on a week of clear liquids then a week of full liquids and progressed from there.

I had no restrictions on showering, my incisions were all glued. I did not have a drain so that wasn't a concern. I did have to give myself the injections for 14 days following surgery. I took Prevacid once I got home for acid reduction however now I take Prilosec. No difference for me really, just had more coupons for Prilosec. I only took the prescribed pain medicine (lortab elixir) once when I got home, I didn't need it. Also I did sleep in a recliner for a couple days once I got home. Getting in and out of bed was difficult, it was 2 weeks before I could sleep on my side again and a bit longer before I could sleep on my stomach.

Make sure you get plenty of rest. I didn't have a lot of stamina and got tired out easily that first week.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
