I just received my surgery date on Monday (August 29th) I was so excited and then I got my Lab results. Apparently, I am slightly Anemic and I am afraid this will effect my surgery date. Has anyone else dealt with this issue? Was the surgery postponed till the Anemia was under control?

Any advise would really be appreciated.

Thanks,

Shell

Shell, did they give you Iron pills to take pre-op??? during lapascopic surgery you have minimial blood loss but you should ask your surgeon or their office staff. You could also call your PCP, please call someone for proper instruction. I would start taking iron pills, you should already be on multi-vitamins. Keep us posted as to your progress and so glad you have a date for surgery!!!!!

I just started taking Iron with my regular Multivitamin and I have my vits coming from BA within the next week. I spoke with the Nurse Case Manager yesterday and we are waiting to see what my Surgeon says about my labs. I will be fine if they set my surgery back, I figure I would rather be safe during the surgery than take a chance just because I am impatient.

Thank you so much for your well wishes.

great job on the 31 pounds lost so far, that will help. It is hard pre-op to lose that much, I know how hard you have to be working. You are ready for your sleeve and I don't think the anemia will slow you down. Keep us posted on what the surgeon says. All info is helpful. :D

Hey!!

I was slighly anemic before surgery too. After you have your pre-op class (it is the last class b-4 surgery), you will also meet with a nurse practictoner. She will go over all your labs with you and ask you a lot of questions. That is when I found out that I had this issue. Dr. Fisher was not concered at all!! He just said that it could become worse after surgery. AND IT DID!!!

I was a mess for about 2 weeks afterwards until I got a handle on it and I take 650mg of ferrous gluconate daily and 2 BA Iron chews. It also got better about week 4 when I could actually eat food!!

I feel a lot better now and my labs are great!! I do feel really tired when it is TOM, but that is what made me anemic to begin with. I will probably always have this issue because my periods are HEAVY!! and i refuse to take birth control.

I highly dobut Dr. Fisher is postpone your surgery. If he didn't mine, why would he yours??? He knows what happened to me and how I am dealing with it and he tells me I will be just fine! ;) Don't worry too much about it, I am sure you will be fine too!!

Hugs,

Kelly

Thank you Kelly. Liz did say that she didn't think it would be a problem. I am so ready for the 29th to get here, that is of course until it is actually here and then I'm sure my nerves will be a bit frazzled lol. I sure appreciate all the support from everyone here in VST land!

Thanks again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
