Heartburn/acid reflux/GERD permanent after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have seen some concerns regarding heartburn/acid reflux/ GERD after surgery but i have not seen whether or not this is a permanent side affect. The forum has plenty f info on how to relieve the pain by diet modification and meds but does it go away on its own?

Thanks

Mine has not. I only have to take my PPI every other day, but I tried to go off of it completely without success.

I have been sleeved since Oct. 2010 and I am on 3-5 prilosecs a day for heartburn and if I go below 3 a day I cant eat or drink! But on the other hand I know many people (Mainly men)who are completely off their PPI..

Wow...constant heartburn is not good has any of your doctors suggested if it will go away or that simply something you have to live with?

I am on Omeprazole - once a day. I am trying to cut it back to every other day. I tried stopping cold turkey and the acid reflux/Gerd was too much for me. I am researching other ways to combat the reflux (naturally) so I am open to any suggestions that anyone has. I have read some pretty scary stuff about prolonged use of PPIs. I am going to talk to my General Practitioner on my next visit to see if she has any other suggestions. She is really into alternative medicines. I will share what I find out.

I was not put on any meds for acid or reflux after surgery and have not had any problems with it.

What my concerns are prolonged heartburn can cause "Barrett's esophagus" which is a esophageal cancer. I read that the valve in the esphagus is destroyed after surgery I cant find a documentation that states the valve regenerates the same as the part of the stomach the produces ghrelin (Hormone that give you hunger pain) regenerates after time

My Surgeon believes it is something I will have 2 live with cause my heartburn has been soo bad and it is just a matter of getting it under control with meds and diet, But my stomach has been extremely sensitive since surgery! I know that most people go down to 1 ppi and some get completely off their ppi's!

I actually talked to Dr Ceringle about this issue yesterday. My acid is so bad and the constant burning in my tummy keeps me up all night. He said go ahead and take my prilosec OTC if I want and it won't hurt me but that the acid mostly comes from eating too much or too fast. Eat three tiny bites that you chew a million times in no less than 15 minutes. I told him I would eat 3 bites in about 7 minutes and he said that was WAY too fast! That it was jjust a matter of practicing eating extremely slow. And practicing and knowing what you can and can not eat and this takes about a year to finally get it right.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
