indy sleever 6 Posted August 9, 2011 I am wondering if it is normal that I have no special pre op diet to follow? My surgery is next week 8/18 and my nutrition class is this Thursday the 11th. When I went to the hospital for all my pre op testing I asked about being on a special diet and they told me no... that I just needed to do Clear Liquids the day before surgery. I see so many posts on here about the pre op diet that I am confused as to why I am not required to do it too? Anyone else out there know the reason? Should I be concerned? Fat4now 7 Posted August 9, 2011 I would say no...My dr doesn't require a pre op diet either...They are all different. You will be fine!
Disney 20 Posted August 9, 2011 Every doctor is different. Maybe your BMI is just low enough not to need one. My surgeon does not require a pre-op diet if BMI is below 40. I was right on the edge, so I did it and it was a low carb diet and I lost 10 pounds in a week. If you really wanted to lose some quick pounds before the surgery, ask your doctor if it would be ok if you went ahead with one even though it is not 'required'. Be sure to get his/her OK first though!

ranoodle 6 Posted August 10, 2011 I have the same requirements as you. Just clear liquids the day before surgery. I'm going to Dr. Schram at Barix in Ypsilanti, MI.
ravenjeh 16 Posted August 10, 2011 My doctor is the same; only Clear Liquids the day before surgery and nothing after midnight. But, I am going to start conditioning myself to Protein Shakes and a low carb diet a week before, just so it won't be such a shock post-op.
