no special pre op diet?

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if it is normal that I have no special pre op diet to follow? My surgery is next week 8/18 and my nutrition class is this Thursday the 11th. When I went to the hospital for all my pre op testing I asked about being on a special diet and they told me no... that I just needed to do Clear Liquids the day before surgery. I see so many posts on here about the pre op diet that I am confused as to why I am not required to do it too? Anyone else out there know the reason? Should I be concerned?

I would say no...My dr doesn't require a pre op diet either...They are all different. You will be fine!

Every doctor is different. Maybe your BMI is just low enough not to need one. My surgeon does not require a pre-op diet if BMI is below 40. I was right on the edge, so I did it and it was a low carb diet and I lost 10 pounds in a week. If you really wanted to lose some quick pounds before the surgery, ask your doctor if it would be ok if you went ahead with one even though it is not 'required'. Be sure to get his/her OK first though!

I have the same requirements as you. Just clear liquids the day before surgery. I'm going to Dr. Schram at Barix in Ypsilanti, MI.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
