No water with meals...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have a question it is what is bothering me the most about being banded. I was told for 30 minutes before, during eating and 30 minutes after I could not drink because it would empty the pouch too soon.

I drink alot (water) with my meals. How do you eat and not drink?? Any sugestions or alternatives that work well for ya'all?

:hungry:

there was a thread on this yesterday. I ignore this rule. I dont drink a huge glass of Water with my meal, but sometimes I might have a glass of wine with dinner. But I drink as soon as I want to afterwards. It makes zero difference to me or my feeling of fullness.

If I am really thirsty during a meal I take a few sips and I fell that I get more full with a drink. I have never felt that the food was "washed" out of my pouch nor had hunger come back more quickly. I spoke with my Dr. about it, and though he does recommend no drinking 30 min before and after, it can be different for everyone, but you have to pay attention to how you really feel. I also can depend on what you are eating. Softer foods can get washed out more quickly, while more dense foods won't move as fast.

I drink right up until before my meal starts. I try and Water load on a glass or two of Water, or iced tea.

I do sometimes drink with my meals, and I haven't really found it to make me hungrier sooner, but with the restriction I have, it can actually mean trouble if I try and drink while I'm eating.

My experience has nothing to do with washing food from teh pouch, but drinking while I am eating is not something I can do. I instantly get a golfball feeling, and have to STOP eating, drinking everything or it is a PB on it's way! I guess it kinda floats the food in my pouch making it back up into the esophogus, according to the Dr. It is not something I want to happen, so I drink, only until I am ready to eat, then nothing until I am finished eating, and wait a little while, then I can drink again just fine. I kind of thought maybe the drinking encouraged me to swallow the food before I would without the Fluid, so maybe the bites ere not chewed as well, like in my pre band days...I dunno, but it hurts, so I don't do it! I hope you have no problems! Good Luck!

I ignore this rule as well..

I have experimented with it alot and just dont see how it matters..

if I can drink, I will.. and it DOES not wash food down.. (not how I eat anyway)

many times I CANT drink.. after eating.. you will know the minute you take a sip if you can or not (or you wont WANT to)

I can drink a lot at a time, no sipping required, and I can drink right up til I start eating. As for how to manage not drinking with meals, all I can say is you WILL get used to it eventually. I used to only drink with meals and now I never do.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
