6 days out afraid of not getting enough nutrients

Recommended Posts

I just had surgery this past Wednesday, August 3, 2011 for the weight loss procedure the vertical sleeve. I attended sessions with the nutrionist and a support group before hand. Every day I am feeling stronger and more healed but am cautious as to what I can take in. I am taking Calcium and a regular every day Vitamin and what ever other medications that I am on. I am now at the stage where I can have Full liquids but am unsure of what that consists of. I was doing proteing shakes and bars just before the surgery but now my taste has changed and I literally gag trying to get a Protein shake down and I do know how important that is to my diet. So in addition to my Vitamins and medication can anyone tell me what types of Soups or liquids other than these Protein Shakes that I can have? I do have the belching and gas issues with certain things I have tried too with this procedure and just need some good support right now.

All doctors seem to have slightly differently lists. Here is what i can have:

low sodium broth

sugar free Jello

sugar free popsicles

Water

Decaf coffee and tea

skim milk

V8

Protein supplements; pre-mixed or powder

I like the vanilla Protein Powder with 1/2 Water & 1/2 skim milk and an ounce of sf coffee Syrup. I also add unflavored Protein Powder in my Jello.< /p>

I'm sure others will add their suggestions too.

Good luck!

Full liquids are also cream-based Soups, yogurt, and sugar-free pudding. Try adding some Greek yogurt to cream of Tomato or potato for some extra Protein, or order some unflavored Unjury to add to mushies when you get to that stage. Just do the best you can, it took me a couple of weeks to meet my surgeon's protein and Water goals.

If you have a GNC they are usually really good about letting you sample things or bring things back if you keep the receipt. You could try Isopure which comes in several flavors and are more fruity tasting than milky.

You can try Kellogs Protein Water which only has a little Protein but it's better than none.

The nectar Protein drinks are very thin and a lot of people like those. You can get samples of that online too.

I was never able to get down the Protein drinks. I started drinking liquid yogurt and keifer to get in Protein and good calories in the second week. Sometimes, all I could handle was vanilla flavored milk (the one in the juice box).

Just make sure you keep up with liquids in general, the biggest problem right now would be dehydration. As you add more real food, your protein levels will go up.

Hang in there---

Thank you for this question! I had surgery 3.5 weeks ago. I am having so much trouble having Protein Shakes. I want to vomit and gag when I just smell them. I was able to get them down right after surgery but after 5 weeks of shakes I can't stomach them. Any ideas to help me get the proper amount of Protein would be helpful. I also feel like the awful taste of them just sits in my mouth all day and I can't get the taste out. What else can I do? I can't take it and I am starving because I am avoiding them. Are Protein Shots better? What brands do people use and like?

The main thing right now is get your fluids. Drink, or should I say sip plenty of Water. I was also concerned with getting enough Protein but at your stage the most important thing is staying hydrated. If you become dehydrated, you will have issues. The protein will come, it does for everyone. Try to make sure you are getting at least 64oz of liquids. Water and gatorade was my friend when I was at your stage. I did the unjury chicken flavor protein powder in warm water, it tasted very good. The shakes were hard for me at your stage as well.

Seems too soon to be on 'full' liquids. I'd back off with chicken broth and flavored Water for another few days.Unjury Protein is the best powder that I have tried. The unflavored kind mixes very well with orange juice and such. The chicken 'soup' is actually pretty good. I haven't tried the flavors yet.

Folks, repeat after me:

As long as you are getting enough Water, and enough Vitamin B12, you cannot suffer from malnutrition at a week out from surgery. You could fast completely -- nothing but Water -- for a couple of weeks before you'd start to suffer from serious malnutrition (although you'd feel miserable after a week or so). Does this mean you SHOULD do this? No. But a few days with less-than-perfect nutrition is NOT going to hurt you, especially if you (like most of us heavy people) had lots of "reserves" to live off of.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
