i want sleeve surgery

Recommended Posts

What I want to know is if anyone got approved to have sleeve surgery and then went to the surgeon to find out they they were going to try to get you to have gastric bypass instead? I am so upset and I really which I had the money to just take off to Mexico and get it done.

This is just my 2cents. Surgeons that try to convince their patients to have RNY typically do not have the same experience with VSG and they are NOT confident in the surgery yet because they do not have the surgical technique down, or they haven't done enough of them to be confident in their levels. OR, the RNY is almost twice as expensive to perform, it's a bigger money maker. The RNY is a much more complicated surgery, has way more risks, and while it might have been around for more years, the 5-8 year results of RNY vs. VSG are neck and neck.

Get the surgery you can live with for the rest of your life. Your surgeons "GETS" to cut on you; you're the one that has to live with what he/she gives you ! ! !

I agree with Tiffykins. Don't let a surgeon make a lifelong decision for you. I am a nurse who has taken care of RNY post op patients with and without complications and I always said I would never have one no matter how fat I was. The only reason I had WLS is because of the sleeve. Stick to your guns, my friend, and you will be much happier...Kathe

You might want to ask your PCP to refer you to a different surgeon. I think the surgeon you chose should support your decisions and should have to make an awfully strong case to get me to change my mind.

I appreciate all your feedback and I totally want the sleeve nothing else. I havent had the chance to speak to the surgeon directly yet but this was the info that I just got from his office and it is making me really nervous. The issue is that in Ontario we can not go directly to a hospital or surgeon of our choice we have to be refered through our family doctor into a barriatric registery and then they choose the doctor that is closest to your area and that's who you get. I would rather just go to Mexico where I can get the doctor of my choice but I am not ablt to financially so that so here I sit waiting and hoping that it all works out.

My surgeon tried to get me to do the lapband, the next day I switched surgeon's.. Now thats just me and how I react, I just don't like people that try to change my mind once i've researched and have done my homework.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
