How soon after vsg can gall bladder problems occur?

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 6 weeks out. I've lost 36 lbs. Today after eating I have an achy pain under my right ribcage. I feel a little nausea. Could this be gall stones this soon? I guess they could happen anytime though. Does that sound like what this is?

Could happen immediately because of rapid weight loss from pre-op dieting. Keep an eye on it. I don't remember much at all being 'mild' 'dull' or just 'achy'. An inflamed gallbladder feels like someone is stabbing you through the ribcage with an ice-pick. Gallstones felt like someone was tazing me on the inside...and passing a stone made me induce lamaze breathing, I turned white, I was shaking with pain, and perspiring with "contractions" that wrapped around my body in waves. Yeah, not pretty.

OK, thanks for the info. Sorry you had such a rough time, that sounds terrible. Maybe mine was just gas or something. It finally passed and hasn't come back.

I've seen it as early as 4-6 weeks out. Mine took 8 months post-op for me to finally have it out. I had ignored the symptoms for 2 solids because I was getting into maintenance, and thought the symptoms were because I was introducing new foods. Low and behold, it my little gallbladder getting all pissy and forming stones.

I chose to NOT take the Actigall which is sometimes prescribed to help prevent gallstone production. BUT, it's not a guarantee, I've seen people take it for 6 months, and then still have their GB removed around the 9-16 month post-op mark. There are some liver contraindications with that drug and for my own medical history, I chose to not take it.

I had my surgery on May 2 and was back in the hospital on May 11 to have the gallbladder out.... My pre op ultrasound showed nothing but right after surgery, I had sludge in there. I had turned yellow and had pain and nausea.... Every one is different. That is just how it happened with me.

Living the dream,

Laura

You can have gallbladder issues at any time. Call your dr or go in. I just had my gallbladder removed on 10/23/11, 1yr and 3 weeks post op, but I had symptoms for 4 months before this. I just ignored it because I thought it was gas. The pain was pretty bad, but it would be over in 30 mins or less, so I tried to ignore it. This last "episode" would not go away, and I could not ignore it. Very painful. I had to go to the ER and have it out in a few days. I had to stay there for a few days until they could get it out. My liver enzymes had to come down first. I was pretty sick. I just posted it about this, so your thread caught my eye. I would get in to your doctor soon and just have it checked, it cant hurt. Don't compare yourself to others, everyone can have different symptoms and experience it differently. I wish I would have gone in sooner, so maybe I could have planned my surgery date! Keep us posted!

I was sleeved on 4/11/11 and had my gallbladder removed on 6/30/11. It was not a fun ride! Passing the stones was the worst pain of my life. Glad all that is over now. Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
