Returned home this afternoon. My story, thus far - hoping it helps...

Thu-4-Aug: Checked-in to the hospital in the evening. Some bloodwork, to ensure my numbers are in control. Antibiotic allergy test. Anti-coagulant injection. Full meal at 10pm.

Fri-5-Aug: Surgery day! Had to wait in pre-op for an hour (this is a HUGE hospital!), nearly toppled the OT table getting on , woke up in post-op, with a bit of gas pain, pushing up into the chest. Doc told me they had to push up my liver to pull out the stomach, so I would have bruised my lungs / diaphragm a bit. The pain medication worked quickly, and I was comfortable within 1-2 hours. Six incisions - guessing two were to "manhandle" my liver - these are the only two that are somewhat painful. Nothing to eat or drink - on IV fluids through the day, and night. Op started 10:30am; done by 1pm; moved into a room by 7pm. Quite comfortable in bed, except for the gas discomfort. Apparently, they pump you full of gas, to help with the surgery...

Sat-6-Aug: Slept well through the night - comfortably. Got out of bed at 7am (two incisions are still tender!) and walked around the room. On IV fluids through the day; they did a "leak" test (fluoroscopy), and then allowed me to sip some Water, coconut Water, and some sugar-free apple juice.

Sun-7-Aug: Again, slept well. Discharged at noon, and back home. Have to consume at least 2 litres of Fluid - seems like a mountain. Frequent walks around the room - the tender incisions are better.

All in all, a very "manageable" and not-so-unpleasant experience. So all of you sleevers-to-be - just smile! :D And good luck with your surgeries!

Great hospital - fantastic surgeon - self-pay (no insurance coverage in India yet!) - cost me around $6000 (incl hospital stay). Connect with me, if you need a lead.

Last, but not least, appreciation for my wife, who stood with me like a rock through all this, and made it all so much easier. Love you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
