Auto Immune Diseases and VSG: Methotrexate

Recommended Posts

I have been warned that the use of Methotrexate may cause me severe consequences post op; I will be at high risk for infections and even deteriorating skin around the staples.

Today, on this forum, I saw the word Plication and looked it up. It seems to be the perfect solution to have the VSG formed with sutures instead of staples.

Just wondering if anyone here has faced these risks because of RA or Psoriatic Arthritis, which is what I have.

My doctor said, I could face getting Sepsis and end up dying! OMG!! I wonder if Plication would eliminate that factor.

If you've had any similar experiences, I'd love to learn more!

I don't have the same situation as you. However, keep in mind there is a risk of death from ANY surgery - no matter what medications or other conditions you may have. Even though I don't have the same conditions that you do, I also could have died from this surgery. Thankfully, I didn't and came through the surgery with NO problems. However, there was still the chance that I could have died on the table - or from a complication right after surgery. However, I didn't let that stop me because it was such a SMALL chance, and I also knew that if I didn't do this, then eventually complications of obesity would.

Fully research both surgeries and talk with your surgeon about your concerns. There's nothing wrong with checking with a couple of different surgeons even. Ultimately, only you can make the decision, but the best way to do that is to get as much info as possible. I hope someone else with a similar situation would be able to give some advice.

It might be best to have your Rheumy and your Bari confer as to which procedure would be optimal in your case. You would be considered a high risk patient since you are RA & on Metho. I personally was not interested in Plication due to post operative risk factors of necrosis, suture tear, scarring, etc. I had my hubby look at the procedure (he is a DVM) and he did not like it at all. I too have an Auto Immune Disease called Primary Biliary Cirrhosis. It is a rare liver disease that attacks the biliary tree in the liver. I had VSG done last Monday and I feel good. Good luck with your decision!!!:D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
